Teaching

Teaching at Walden University is grounded in a person-centered approach that emphasizes awareness of students’ diverse professional backgrounds and lived experiences. Faculty use varied instructional strategies to activate student strengths and help them make meaningful connections between course content, their lives, and their developing professional identities. They cultivate welcoming, engaging learning environments by maintaining regular communication and promoting dynamic spaces that support discussion, clinical judgment, and academic growth.

Faculty provide individualized support through constructive feedback and guidance that prepares students for future learning and professional opportunities. They demonstrate genuine care for student well-being and development through personalized instruction. In alignment with Walden’s mission and vision, faculty remain accessible via multiple communication methods and are expected to teach assigned Canvas courses, log in at least four days per week, and respond to student inquiries within 48 hours. All engagement and feedback must follow established guidelines and academic standards. Faculty use online technologies effectively to deliver timely, substantive, and professional instruction. Performance is evaluated based on fulfillment of essential duties and adherence to university expectations.

A minimum of one year of online teaching experience at the MSN or doctoral level is preferred, along with experience mentoring doctoral students and serving on dissertation committees. Faculty must demonstrate strong student-centered teaching skills, including excellent communication, collaboration, emotional intelligence, organization, data management, and commitment to student learning and development.

Scholarship

Walden University acknowledges scholarship as an essential complement to effective teaching and the development of students as scholar-practitioners. Faculty members demonstrate their commitment to scholarship by creating new knowledge through research, interpreting knowledge across disciplines, examining teaching models to optimize learning, and addressing complex problems within the discipline and broader society. Faculty are encouraged to participate in scholarship activities that align with Walden’s mission and values. These scholarly expectations and activities are coordinated with academic leaders, with specific requirements determined by the program and/or the college.

Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong record of scholarship, including research, publication, committee service, and academic advisement. Preferred areas of expertise include nursing theory, research methods, leadership, nursing education, and population health. A distinguished record of peer-reviewed publications and externally funded research is highly valued. Faculty are expected to remain current in their discipline through ongoing engagement with research, scholarship, and professional activities, and may publish work acknowledging the university when appropriate.

Service

Walden University also recognizes service as a critical component that complements both teaching and scholarship. Faculty demonstrate a strong and consistent record of service to the institution and community, contributing in meaningful ways that advance the university’s educational mission. They are encouraged to engage in service activities aligned with the Walden mission that support the institution, the profession, and the broader community. Service expectations are coordinated with academic leaders, with specific requirements determined by the program and/or college.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Faculty adhere to all expectations established by Walden University, which are communicated at the start of employment and reinforced through the Faculty Handbook. They are required to attend virtual and in-person meetings, residencies, workshops, commencements, and trainings as needed. Faculty must be able to work a student-friendly schedule that may include evenings and weekends. They also perform other duties as assigned and comply fully with all university policies and standards.
