API Product Designer

AI overview

Collaborate on API architecture and design while enhancing the developer experience, shaping documentation, and standardizing API interactions for a new product.

Role Description

We are looking for curious and creative problem solvers who are highly collaborative, love to iterate and drive growth. Our ideal candidate is an entrepreneurial product designer with proven success in bringing APIs to market.

As our first API Product Designer, you will shape how developers interact with our platform. You will be designing the Developer Experience (DX), and be responsible for the "usability" of our endpoints, the clarity of our documentation, and the consistency of our API ecosystem.

What you’ll do

  • API Architecture & Design: Collaborate with engineers to design intuitive APIs that follow industry best practices.
  • Developer Experience (DX): Own the documentation portal, SDKs, and onboarding flow to ensure developers can get to their first request (TFR) in seconds, and their "Aha!" moment in minutes.
  • User Research: Conduct interviews with clients to understand their pain points and integration workflows.
  • Standardization: Create and maintain an API Style Guide to ensure consistency across all services.
  • Prototyping: Use tools like Stoplight, Postman, or Swagger to prototype and mock APIs before a single line of code is written. We’ll also expect you can prototype API yourself in a language like Python.

Requirements

  • API Lover: You love the world of APIs, and get excited trying out newly released APIs, on-boardings flows, and writing prototypes. You are fluent with authentication, versioning, documentation, error handling, performance, and standards like REST, GraphQL, or Webhooks.
  • Systems Thinker: You understand the constraints of backend systems but have empathy for your users. You see the "big picture" of how data flows between systems.
  • Pragmatic Architect: You are a bias-to-action "ship-mover." You balance the desire for the "perfect" API design with the startup reality of delivering value to customers today. You thrive in the "zero-to-one" phase and are comfortable wearing multiple hats.
  • Public Iteration Advocate: You are comfortable "showing your work". You see public disagreement or feedback as a signal for improvement rather than a source of friction.
  • Async Native: You are an expert at asynchronous communication. You can move projects forward through clear, concise writing, reducing the need for synchronous meetings while keeping everyone aligned.
  • Collaborative: You view "ownership" as the responsibility to make the best decision, but not take it unilaterally. You bring options to the table, seek feedback early, and know how to compromise—or push back—with sound reasoning.
