Android Engineer, Booking

AI overview

Join a small team on the Booking team to develop innovative Android applications that enhance user experiences and improve interaction with Waymo's autonomous systems.

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world's most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo’s fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states.

Waymo’s commercial service is scaling at a rapid pace. We’re investing in our infrastructure to support this growth into a high-scale, world-class service.

The booking team serves as the “front doors” into Waymo’s ride-hailing marketplace. In this high-impact role, you’ll be joining the Booking team to introduce high-value options that give riders agency to manage value tradeoffs, optimize the core booking flow with new modalities and options, and develop a powerful booking platform with intelligent features.

In this hybrid role, you will report to an Engineering Manager.

You will:

  • Work on a small team that builds the core hailing flow for an Android application that hails and controls Waymo autonomous cars. You’ll be focusing on premium and innovative flows that help users plan, create, and manage their trip — giving riders powerful features with industry-leading UX.
  • Create delightful Android components and flows using modern Android technologies such as Jetpack Compose.
  • Build features which inspire trust in autonomous vehicle systems. The team works with UX designers and researchers, product managers, and vehicle software engineers to bring this technology to customers.

You have:

  • B.S. degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
  • 3+ years of experience with Android development
  • Experience with Jetpack Compose in a production environment
  • Passion for  building user-facing products with a focus on pixel-perfect UI
  • Experience partnering with product managers and designers
  • Background in test-driven development

We prefer:

  • Full-stack experience
  • Experience building and maintaining shared Android libraries or components
  • Experience with performance analysis, profiling, and optimization tools
  • Familiarity with dependency injection frameworks like Dagger
  • Experience with accessibility best practices
