Position title: Battery Simulation Engineer
Employment type: Full-time

Job description:

As a Battery Simulation Engineer, you will be responsible for developing, validating, and applying electrical and thermal models of battery cells, modules, and full packs. Your work will directly support the development and integration of high-performance, safe, and reliable battery systems across various applications. This role requires a strong foundation in battery fundamentals, simulation techniques, high-voltage electrical circuits, and systems-level thinking. You will respond to technical requests using established tools and methodologies while also contributing to the development of new modeling approaches to address emerging challenges in battery safety and performance.

The responsibilities in this position include, but are not limited to:
- Develop and implement physics-based and empirical models for simulating the electrical, thermal, and degradation performance of lithium-ion battery systems.

- Conduct 1D simulation studies to evaluate battery behavior under various electrical, thermal, and environmental conditions, including fast charging, thermal events, and aging.

- Analyze laboratory test data to extract model parameters, validate simulation results, and improve model robustness.

- Perform sensitivity studies, scenario simulation, and model-based evaluations to support design and engineering decisions.

- Collaborate closely with cell, module, and pack design engineers, as well as test and control teams, to define requirements and optimize system performance.

- Prepare technical documentation, reports, and presentations summarizing modeling methodology and simulation outcomes.

- Collaborate cross-functionally with product teams and share progress and insights with stakeholders.

Basic qualifications:

- Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering, or Applied Physics from an ABET-accredited university.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience using simulation tools for engineering applications.
- Hands-on experience with 0D/1D battery simulation and analysis tools such as GT-SUITE, MATLAB/Simulink, Amesim, or equivalent.
- Strong Understanding of lithium-ion battery fundamentals, including battery performance characteristics, thermal characteristics, and aging mechanisms.

- Fundamental understanding of HV electrical circuits, busbar design, and Battery Disconnect Unit (BDU) functionality within a battery system.

- Ability to analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings clearly.

- Experience with optimization methods (DOE, parameter estimation, control optimization).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, with the ability to clearly present technical findings to cross-functional teams.
- Proven teamwork, interpersonal skills, and the ability to solve complex technical problems using analytical and simulation-based approaches.

Preferred qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering with a focus on battery systems, electrochemistry, or thermal management.
- Hands-on experience with battery testing methods, aging studies, and performance evaluation.
- Proficiency in developing and applying 0D/1D/3D simulation models for battery systems.
- Background in embedded controls, Kalman filters, or estimator design for SOC/SOH/SOP.
- Good overall knowledge of battery performance and thermal management.
- Good skills in programming with commercial software (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, Python, Visual C++).
