Ampol Petroleum Distributors (APD) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Ampol, with 164 team members working across driving, depot, fleet, and field sales roles. Through 17 depots and a fleet of 84 vehicles, we safely and reliably deliver fuel across Queensland, New South Wales, and southern Western Australia. 

 

 

About the role

Reporting to the Head of APD, the State Manager has overall accountability for leading the NSW APD business. This role provides senior leadership to a geographically dispersed team, overseeing all operational aspects to deliver safe, reliable, and competitive performance. The State Manager ensures the safe and efficient delivery of products, meets customer requirements, and drives sales growth across the state. 

This role would ideally be based in Newcastle, however Sydney based candidates with the right experience in leadership with a small to medium enterprise will be considered. The position requires a regular on-site presence in Newcastle and Sydney, as well as periodic travel to regional sites. 

 

 

Key responsibilities:  

  • Lead Incident and Injury Free performance and Operational Excellence by championing safe work practices and ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. 

  • Ensure all facilities operate safely, efficiently, reliably, and in a cost-effective manner, including effective asset, expenditure, and budget management. 

  • Proactively identify and deliver improvement initiatives and projects that enhance all aspects of the APD business. 

  • Deliver high levels of service to internal and external customers, driving APD customer growth through increased volume and margin performance. 

  • Build, develop, and lead a highly capable, motivated, inclusive, and diverse team, mentoring talent and fostering an open working environment. 

  • Actively contribute as a visible and approachable leader within the APD Leadership Team, providing operational input to capital stewardship and engaging regularly in the field and business initiatives. 

 

 

 

About you:  

A people-focused leader who actively drives a strong, positive culture and fosters high performance through engagement, clear direction and accountability. Solutions focused and always looking to improve all areas of our business, consistently identifying and implementing operational efficiencies and providing strategic direction for NSW.   Brings leadership experience, ideally from a small to medium enterprise environment, enabling agility, strong commercial acumen, and the ability to balance strategy whilst supporting your leaders on day-to-day execution with excellence. Highly effective in customer management and stakeholder engagement. 

 

 

Qualifications 

  • Demonstrated operations experience, with sales exposure or a strong understanding of sales processes and direct customer engagement. 

  •  Strong people leadership capability, with a clear focus on coaching, developing, and motivating teams. 

  • Proven ability to set and drive strategic direction for APD NSW aligned with business objectives. 

  • Solid experience managing and using P&L to identify performance improvement and growth opportunities. 

  • High level of independence and organisational skill to plan, prioritise, and oversee work to meet objectives efficiently. 

  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving ability, including assessing complex situations, exercising sound judgement, and using data insights (e.g., Power BI) to support effective decision-making.
