Overview

We’re seeking a graduate-level AI Strategy & Data Science Intern to identify and evaluate opportunities for AI across our organization. You’ll work closely with our VP of HR, IT & Administration and collaborate with our internal IT team and Data Science team to understand each department’s unique workflows, uncover opportunities where AI can make a measurable impact, and recommend tailored AI-driven solutions - while ensuring alignment with IT security and cybersecurity best practices. This is a hands-on, high-impact role that combines technical insight with strategic thinking and cross-functional collaboration.

The qualified intern will apply their skills and knowledge in data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), statistics, and programming to develop chatbots, AI agents, and other relevant initiatives, which will be used by SB Energy users. You will be immersed in the latest NLP techniques, machine learning models, and ethical AI practices to build scalable, efficient, and impactful AI applications.

Responsibilities

• Conduct a needs assessment for each department, understanding their unique workflows and identifying operational/strategic opportunities to leverage AI.
• Research AI tools, platforms, and approaches aligned with company priorities and security standards.
• Design and fine-tune LLMs using advanced NLP techniques to develop AI applications. Implement best practices in model training to optimize performance.
• Apply machine learning principles to train and fine-tune AI chatbot/agents, ensuring it learns new API syntaxes and adapts to evolving data analysis and retrieval requirements.
• Evaluate the AI applications' performance using benchmarking metrics such as BLEU (Bilingual Evaluation Understudy), ROUGE (Recall-Oriented Understudy for Gisting Evaluation), and perplexity scores.
• Recommend tailored AI tools for each department’s needs, considering implementation feasibility, impact, and ROI.
• Ensure all recommendations align with company cybersecurity and data privacy standards.
• Present actionable insights and solution roadmaps to leadership.
• Educate teams on relevant AI trends, tools, and risks.
• Support development or implementation of pilot solutions.

Skills And Experience

• Graduate student or recent graduate in:
• MS in AI/Data Science, Computer Science, Business Analytics, or MBA with tech focus.
• Experience applying AI or data science tools in real-world projects (capstone, internship, or work).
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Experience with tools like LLM development frameworks (e.g., OpenAI, Copilot), Python, SQL, Power BI, etc.
• Experience with cloud-based ML AI services.
• Project management or consulting experience a plus.
• Preferred certifications: AWS/Google AI, CAP, PMP, or similar.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
