We are looking for an Associate Director, Product Design - Design Systems & Content Design to lead our Platform design teams, based in either our Boston, MA or Bellevue, WA offices. You will guide the creation of a consistent and accessible design system that reflects the Chewy brand, while setting the bar for clear, compelling content in a writing-forward culture. You will work closely with partners across brand, merchandising, and site experience teams to deliver a dynamic, ever-evolving platform that delights millions of pet parents. What You’ll Do:

Product & Design Strategy

  • Transform customer and business objectives into compelling, purposeful, and feasible products.
  • Lead innovative, systems-level thinking across a range of products, platforms, and devices.
  • Champion cohesion and consistency across a growing portfolio of products, while encouraging a culture of innovation.

Execution & Delivery

  • Lead full design process - from discovery and ideation to flows, wireframes, and high-fidelity prototypes.
  • Maintain a bias for action and prioritize across multiple initiatives.

Team Leadership & Growth

  • Lead and develop a high-performing design team, ensuring they are engaged, effective, and continuously growing.
  • Champion Chewy’s culture and principles, setting new standards for operational and executional excellence.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner closely with product managers, developers, content strategists, user researchers, and fellow designers.
  • Clearly articulate and present design thinking, process, and decisions to a wide range of Team Members, including senior leadership and C-suite executives.

What You'll Need:

Design Experience & Expertise

  • 7+ years of experience as a user experience designer, interaction designer, information architect, or similar role.
  • Advanced proficiency in core design, including interaction design, information architecture, and user interface design.
  • Consistently crafting high-quality digital products that deliver measurable results, supported by a strong portfolio or case studies.

Leadership & Team Management

  • 4+ years of experience managing multidisciplinary teams, including researchers, content strategists, and product designers.
  • Ability to evaluate both customer and business impact of design decisions across product areas.
  • Ability to lead large scale initiatives involving multiple Team Members groups

Communication & Collaboration

  • Strong communication, presentation, and social skills.
  • Ability to clearly articulate complex concepts to diverse audiences and Team Members at all levels.

Education & Work Environment

  • Bachelor's degree in design, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), or a related field—or equivalent professional experience in the design industry.
  • Ability to travel quarterly as needed; role requires regular presence in a local office.

Preferred Qualifications:

Leadership & Team Management

  • Experience leading teams of 10+ including leading other managers.

Content Design & Systems Thinking

  • Background in content design or design systems, with a track record of developing standards adopted across an organization.
  • Experience building and supporting design frameworks through clear guidance and team enablement.

Industry Experience

  • Background in e-commerce, retail brands, or merchandising environments, with an understanding of customer behavior and business goals in those contexts.

Work Arrangement:

  • Hybrid Model: 3 days in hub location per week
  • Remote: This role is NOT a remote role.

The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate’s relevant experience, education, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for 401k and a new hire and annual equity grant.

Exempt salary team members have unlimited PTO, subject to manager approval. Team members will receive six paid holidays per year. Team members may be eligible for paid sick and family leave in compliance with applicable state and local regulations. 

Base Salary Range
$166,000$265,500 USD
