2023 Research Intern, Wireless Communications and Sensing Systems

Lab Summary: The Standards & Mobility Innovation team is committed to developing technologies that enable ubiquitous access to information and provide immersive multimedia experiences for mobility users.  Our research focuses on:

  • Wireless standards and technology including Wi-Fi, 5G, LTE-A, IoT
  • RF & fast prototyping of 5G and IEEE 802 wireless systems and/or use cases
  • Multimedia standards and technology including VR, HDR, All-IP delivery.

Position Summary:  Join SMI lab of Samsung Research America in Plano, Texas to contribute to the R &D of the IEEE 802.11, 802.15 or 5G based communication or sensing systems design and prototyping.

Responsibilities:

 In this position, the incumbent will involve in one or more of the following activities:

  • Wireless sensing
    • Investigate new approaches and signal processing/machine learning algorithms for Wi-Fi/mm Wave/UWB sensing (including active/passive radar)
  • Indoor positioning
    • Develop indoor positioning technologies based on IEEE 802.11 or 802.15 next generation wireless system
  • Next-generation communications
    • Assist in algorithm design and analysis based on PHY/MAC layers of IEEE 802.11 and 3GPP 5G NR technologies
    • Develop necessary simulators for IEEE 802.11 wireless systems or 5G cellular network to evaluate algorithm designs
  • General
    • Develop prototypes of potential solutions
    • Perform system performance analysis and problem diagnosis
    • Involve in the development of related IPR(s)

Skills/Experience

  • Sound technical background in signal processing, machine learning, wireless communication systems and algorithms, and measurable familiarity with IEEE 802.11,802.15 standards or 3GPP LTE/NR standards.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively represent the derived results and technical concepts developed in the course of the work.
  • Ability to work within Samsung in cross-functional, cross-divisional teams.
  • Hands-on MATLAB, C++, Python coding skills.
  • PhD student preferable or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Within the hourly pay rate range, individual rates depend on a number of factors—including the role’s function and location as well as the individual’s knowledge, skills, experience, education and training. This is part of our comprehensive compensation package with annual bonus eligibility and generous benefits to help you live life well.
