About the Role

The Surgical Veterinary Intern role is designed for veterinarians seeking hands-on training and mentorship in all areas of small animal surgery. The 12-month program provides comprehensive exposure to consultations, diagnostic investigations, imaging, anaesthesia, surgical procedures, post-operative care, client communication, and high-quality medical record maintenance.

Interns will support the surgical referral team in day-to-day operations and contribute to optimal patient care, while developing a strong foundation for those wishing to pursue a residency in small animal surgery.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing surgical inpatients, performing exams, planning treatments, and presenting cases during rounds
  • Conducting surgical revisit consultations, post-operative assessments, and patient discharges
  • Assisting with diagnostic and surgical procedures under supervision, including radiography and anaesthesia
  • Preparing patients for surgery, maintaining aseptic technique, and submitting pathology samples promptly
  • Completing medical records, discharge instructions, and medication dispensing
  • Participating in ERH education programs, journal clubs, case rounds, and presentations
  • Contributing to SOP and protocol development and fostering a positive, collaborative team culture
  • Systematic physical and orthopaedic examinations with problem-oriented clinical reasoning
  • Diagnostic radiography for surgical patients
  • Aseptic technique and correct use of surgical instruments
  • Foundational surgical skills: suturing, ligature placement, abdominal exploration, routine soft tissue procedures
  • Management of common orthopaedic and complex soft tissue conditions

Requirements

  • Veterinary Science degree and registration with the Victorian Veterinary Practitioners Board of Victoria
  • Minimum 2 years clinical experience with a strong interest in small animal surgery
  • Sound clinical judgment, excellent communication skills, and a positive, enthusiastic attitude
  • Ability to manage stressful situations and ask for guidance when needed
