Position Summary: 

Are you passionate about writing and editing, with a keen eye for detail? Alethea is seeking an Writer / Editor to join our team and play a crucial role in refining our reports for a diverse client base, including government, nonprofit, public, private, and high-net-worth sectors. In this role, you will support analysts drafting initial reports (meticulously proofreading, formatting, and editing), as well as maintaining and enhancing our methodology and process documentation. Responsibilities include:

  • Proofread: Dive into the details of reports and other Analysis Team deliverables, correcting grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting with an eagle eye for precision.
  • Format: Format and refine documents in Google Docs, ensuring each publication boasts a polished, consistent layout, proper font usage, and adherence to Alethea's style guidelines.
  • Quality: Refine analytical reports, focusing on enhancing clarity, accuracy, consistency, and depth to deliver high-impact insights.
  • Draft: Support drafting reports, swiftly adapting to write about new client subjects or industries with insightful and engaging content.
  • Methodology: Support the evolution of  non-technical methodology documentation, including the internal style guide, glossary, report templates, and other reference materials.

Skills/Experience:

  • Education: Degree in English, Journalism, Media, Politics, Government, Communications, Disinformation or a related field with strong GPA. 
  • Experience: 5+ years of proven experience in analytical writing and editing
  • Attention to Detail: Exceptional focus on precision and quality, with a commitment to producing high-caliber work against tight deadlines.
  • Technical Skills: Strong proficiency with G-Suite tools, especially Google Docs, and the ability to use these tools effectively.
  • Communication: Superior written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly, concisely, and effectively while adapting to a prescribed style.
  • Growth Mindset: Adaptable and open to feedback, with a drive to continuously improve and grow in a dynamic work environment.
  • Emotional Intelligence: High emotional intelligence, capable of anticipating needs, proactively developing solutions, and handling sensitive information with discretion and integrity.
  • Curiosity and Drive: Independent thinker with a relentless curiosity and a drive to excel and achieve success.

Preferred Qualifications (Not required):

  • Prior work experience analyzing social media data.
  • Familiarity with the disinformation space (e.g. through academic research, training, or prior work experience)
  • A well-developed understanding—either through research, study, or experience—of one of the following areas: social media research, government and politics, disinformation, information operations, violent extremism, intelligence operations, computer science, or cybersecurity. 

Compensation and Benefits: 

  • Salary and stock options are negotiated based on experience. 
  • Healthcare at the gold-tier level, dental, and vision is fully funded by the employer. 50% of dependent coverage is provided by the employer.  Additional benefits include employer provided life and AD&D insurance and an Employee Assistance Program with a variety of services, including generous Mental Wellbeing support. 
  • Flexible vacation, sick leave, including office closure between Christmas and New Year’s, and extended holidays at Thanksgiving and the 4th of July.
  • Employees may also participate in an Employer sponsored 401k, after their 6-month anniversary, with a 3% match. Health Savings (HSAs) and flexible spending accounts (FSAs) are also offered.
  • Hybrid work environment, with 3 days per week required in office in Washington, D.C or New York.

The salary range for this position is $64,000 to $94,000 per year, depending on the candidate’s skills, experience, and qualifications.   In addition to cash compensation, this role is eligible for a stock option grant. Further, we offer comprehensive benefits, including flexible PTO, health, dental and vision plans, and generous company holidays.  From time to time, employees may also be provided with opportunities for professional growth, development, and advancement.
