The Weekend Night Editor should possess sound news judgment, experience running breaking news stories, conceiving unique angles on big news stories, and an ability to work both collaboratively and independently.

The person in this role should be able to not only put news events into a larger context but also anticipate how the news cycle around a given subject will develop.

This role involves working East Coast hours on Saturdays and Sundays, and Mondays. While our global headquarters is in New York, this position can be fully remote anywhere in the U.S.

Role and responsibilities

  • Conceive, write, edit and publish unique and timely stories that bring Newsweek to the forefront of the news conversations of the day.

  • Commission and edit stories on a variety of subjects throughout the day.
  • Able to change direction quickly when reacting to breaking news.
  • Make sure all stories have the best headlines, lead images, and related links for maximum impact.
  • Recognize newsworthy moments, stories and trends, and help make sure Newsweek is prioritizing unique angles.

Requirements

  • At least five years' experience in journalism with some experience leading a team.
  • Comfortable working on stories across a range of subjects (crime, health, business, etc.)
  • The ability to work quickly while under pressure is essential.
  • Familiarity with using social media and Google trends.
  • Able to work fast, communicate clearly and read articles closely while under pressure.
  • Experience working in a digital newsroom with a quasi-remote team.
  • Willingness to work Saturday, Sunday and Monday evenings.
