As a company, we live our values every day and we're committed to making sure our friendly and inclusive environment grows with us.

About the role

Are you looking for an opportunity to use your design experience whilst helping to improve design process on an established product used by tens of thousands of users?

We’re on the hunt for a Product Designer to help improve and extend our product functionality. You’ll work in a fast-paced growing environment helping to deliver customer improvements at pace, with plenty of improvement to be made over the long-term and we need someone who can balance short-term pragmatism with long-term ambition.

Working alongside one other Product Designer, this is a great opportunity for someone who wants to be part of early-stage design discussions and ideations and play a big part in improving our design processes alongside providing a day-to-day design support to our engineering teams.

What you'll do

Working closely with our Tech Leads and Product Managers you will be completing UX and UI design activities across the software development lifecycle.

  • Take briefs from Product Managers and deliver logical, scalable and consistent design work that meet requirements and work within technical constraints.
  • Help Product Managers and Engineers understand different solutions to problems, educating where necessary on the strengths and benefits to different approaches.
  • Use your expertise to regularly provide ad hoc design guidance and advice to Engineers.
  • Contribute to our growing UI kit and ensure greater consistency by using it over time.
  • Suggest changes to design process in an environment where your opinion will be heard.
  • Aid Product Managers in feature discovery and design validation, where appropriate.
  • Take an active role in QA – reviewing implemented work against designs and providing clear feedback to Engineers.

About you

  • A good blend of visual, UI and UX skills – being highly competent with high-fidelity designs, at a minimum, and an interest in contributing across all three areas.
  • Experience working on complex enterprise software flows – think dependencies, validation, using existing patterns by default, and thinking through the edge-cases.
  • A team player – prepared to make compromises in the short-term for the better of the team, suggesting and tactically using different deliverables based on timescales and priorities.
  • A drive to learn and improve, both individually but also for Dayshape and the design function.
  • Competent with Figma and basic prototyping
  • Detail-oriented – happy explaining why design decisions have been made and providing ad hoc feedback and advice to a large Engineering team.
  • Comfortable presenting and explaining work to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience working on an established product – making incremental improvements to a live product with a large user base – not just experience in new products or greenfield features.
  • Comfortable working without a defined design process and working within constraints, but proactive in offering ideas to help establish better ways of working over time.
  • Interest in the full feature lifecycle – from conceptual and research through low-fidelity into higher fidelity and into development handoff and on to improvement over time – not necessarily an expert in all parts but a willingness to learn and develop.
  • Great at asking awkward questions, kindly.

Bonus points if you have

  • Experience in discovery and/or validation of design concepts with users e.g. usability testing.
  • Basic technical awareness (e.g. HTML/CSS/front-end frameworks and data) to be able to understand technical concepts in conversation with Engineers.
  • Prior experience, or awareness, in designing for accessibility.
  • Awareness of basic resource management principles (time, management, scheduling, budgets) or ERP/ HCM software (e.g. Workday, Salesforce)

What you’ll get

  • Salary £40,000 - £46,305 (depending on experience)
  • At least £1,000 per year to spend on professional and personal development
  • 33 days' holiday per year (including bank holidays), increasing by 1 day each year to a maximum of 40 days
  • Paid four-week sabbatical in your fifth anniversary year on top of your holiday entitlement
  • Private healthcare and rewards through Vitality
  • Income protection and death in service cover
  • Enhanced family leave policies
  • Matched 5% auto-enrolment workplace pension scheme
  • Access to wellbeing offerings, such as our Employee Assistance Programme and a dedicated counselling service
  • Innovation Week twice a year - a chance to experiment and work off-project
  • Weekly All Hands meeting for inspiration and over-communication
  • Time out of the working week for team socials each month, with a mix of in-person and virtual options: past events include hiking, family BBQs, online games, D&D, and at-home cocktail classes!
  • Genuinely nice, smart people to work with, who are excited about growing our company

Working Details

This is a full-time role (37.5 hours per week). We typically work from 09:00 - 17:30 from Monday to Friday, though we can be flexible around this, just let us know. We are looking for someone in or around the Edinburgh area. Our office is right in the city centre. We’re ideally looking for somebody who could work on a hybrid basis, with time in the office likely to be a minimum of 2-4 times a month (to facilitate in-person whiteboard sessions etc).

Join the team!

Equality or opportunity is more than just a responsibility: we believe it’s a huge advantage to welcome a variety of experiences and perspectives into the team. Diversity is a great asset and, as such, we strongly encourage applications from any background.

This is your opportunity to really influence how we get things done. We’re doing well, but there’s lots more to do to maintain the high bar and pace that we’ve set.

Everyone here is growing personally as the company grows, so if that sounds like something you’d like to be part of, we’d love to see your application.
