User Research Manager

San Francisco, United States

About Us:

We're on a mission to make it possible for every person, team, and company to be able to tailor their software to solve any problem and take on any challenge. Computers may be our most powerful tools, but most of us can't build or modify the software we use on them every day. At Notion, we want to change this with focus, design, and craft.

We've been working on this together since 2016, and have customers like Pixar, Mitsubishi, Figma, Plaid, Match Group, and thousands more on this journey with us. Today, we're growing fast and excited for new teammates to join us who are the best at what they do. We're passionate about building a company as diverse and creative as the millions of people Notion reaches

About the role:

Notion is looking for an experienced manager to lead a team of talented User Experience (UX) Researchers. The person in this role will care deeply about people and be a great mentor and coach — supporting members of their team on research strategy, methodological excellence, and communicating research for impact. Besides supporting their direct reports, they’ll also excel at translating research into actionable insights that drive product and business strategy, and building trusted and valued partnership with cross-functional stakeholders. While 75% of this role is management focused, 25% of time will be spent doing hands-on IC work. This role will report into and partner closely with the Head of Research, and will play a hands-on role scaling Notion’s UX Research function.

What You'll Achieve:

  • Identify high-impact research opportunities to ensure your team’s building the right portfolio of projects to drive key business and product goals, as well as personal growth.
  • Set expectations and coach your team on research quality, communication, and impact.
  • Lead and represent your team through strong cross-functional relationships — leveraging research insights and advocating for a user-centered approach to company and product strategy.
  • Foster a team culture of cohesion and transparency through discussion and recognition.
  • Prioritize and conduct IC UX research that drives product and business decision making.
  • Share research findings, leveraging clear communication strategies and adapting your approach for different audiences — including company leadership.
  • Accelerate team efficiency by improving workflows and processes.

Skills You'll Need to Bring:

  • You have 4+ years of professional industry experience managing UX Researchers and a Bachelors Degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Psychology, Behavioral Economics, Anthropology, Sociology, Statistics, or similar.
  • You have a proven track-record of building and managing teams that deliver high quality research with measurable business value.
  • You excel at partnering closely with Product Managers, Designers, Engineers, and Data Scientists. You observe and internalize all inputs and feedback to help you reach an optimal decision and prioritize wisely.
  • You have a deep understanding and hands-on-experience using research methods such as concepts and usability testing, focus groups, surveys, 1:1 interviews, etc. and can support your direct reports when they ask questions or want feedback, and hold a high quality bar for your team.

Nice to Haves:

  • Masters or PhD Degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Psychology, Behavioral Economics, Anthropology, Sociology, or similar.
  • You’ve managed teams with 5+ researchers
  • Passion for working and learning in a fast-growing company.
  • Experience working closely with C-suite executives.
  • Experience with SQL or Python
  • Experience communicating research to executive stakeholders
  • You're familiar with the work of computing heroes like Douglas Engelbart, Alan Kay, Bret Victor, etc. — and understand why we're big fans.
