About the Role

We’re looking for an early-career journalist with experience reporting on technology or the business of technology to fill a paid position as a Tech Newsroom Fellow. The fellow will work closely with Semafor’s San Francisco-based Tech Editor to work on original stories, produce the twice-weekly tech newsletter, and contribute to our breaking news and Signals coverage. The position also entails production tasks, including monitoring news, writing fixtures and creating charts for the newsletter, and helping build, produce, and publish it on deadline.

Ideal candidates are self-starters, keen to get involved in a growing newsroom, and to contribute in any and all ways, including administrative tasks, research, producing newsletters, and creating data visualizations to accompany our publications. Knowledge of, and experience in, covering tech or the business of tech is essential. Training will be available for building data visualizations and other production responsibilities, although candidates should bring some core skills and experience to the position.

The position is based in the San Francisco areas, although we might consider other locations. The Fellow will report to the Tech Editor. Candidates will be asked to complete a writing exercise as part of the interview process, and must retain the right to work where they live.

Your responsibilities

  • Contribute to our world-leading coverage of the tech industry through original reporting and research.
  • Provide critical, production, and other logistical support for Semafor’s tech vertical and newsletter.
  • Stay on top of tech and business news issues to be able to identify topics of most interest to readers.
  • Assist in planning breaking coverage and newsletter production.
  • Collaborate closely with the rest of Editorial work seamlessly across all of Semafor, and contribute to other products as they are developed.
  • Work with the Tech Editor and/or Senior Editor to manage the production and logistics of the newsletter.
  • Work with the Breaking News Editor to write tech news Signals and breaking news posts for a globally aware and sophisticated audience

What makes you qualified

  • A minimum of two year’s experience covering tech or the business of tech and a deep interest in the subject.
  • Ability to work independently to research, report, and write about business topics.
  • A willingness to take on a variety of tasks and responsibilities, ranging from coverage duties on deadline to production and administrative duties.
  • A broad reading list across conventional and unconventional sources
  • An eagerness to be part of a dynamic work environment demanding initiative, flexibility, and a willingness to jump in wherever needed to help the team succeed

Compensation

  • $50,000 to $75,000 on an annualized basis.
  • Six-month contract renewable for up to two years.
