Insider Inc is hiring a

Tech News Fellow (January 2025)

London, United Kingdom

Business Insider is hiring a fellow to join our tech team.

Business Insider is for people who are driven, optimistic and always looking forward. Our mission is to inspire action through thought-provoking stories. We tell our audience what they want and need to know to improve their lives and the world with storytelling that is accessible, smart, sometimes unexpected, and always helpful. Our team members embody and uphold Business Insider’s three core values: we are all one team, we are effective, and we strive to get better every day.

**Fellowship applications close October 18, 2024**

The Business Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This role requires you to work for 40 hours a week. Fellowships can be hybrid, and we expect London-based fellows to come into our London offices at least twice per week. Business Insider policies, including the hybrid policy, are continually reviewed and may be subject to change.

The Role & Team:

Business Insider is looking for a reporting fellow interested in the fast-paced world of tech, startups, and venture capital. Our tech team closely covers the companies, investors and entrepreneurs that are changing the world and hold them accountable. The ideal candidate enjoys writing about new technology, how founders lead and grow their young startups, and how VCs go about backing the next big unicorns. They will also enjoy writing about the biggest companies in the tech world, such as Nvidia, Meta, and Amazon — along with the disruptors who are leading them.

The ideal fellow will embrace covering tech, startups and venture capital with passion, have an interest in developing industry contacts, and a desire to develop intimate knowledge of the sector. They will be versatile enough to react quickly and write clearly, while still pursuing deal scoops, ambitious features and impactful investigations. They are a team player who is excited about working in an inclusive environment and getting better every day.

The tech, startups and VC reporting fellow will spend their time doing meaningful work: researching, writing, pitching, and producing features, lists, profiles — even possibly breaking news. They’ll work on stories like:

How Carra Wu, a 23-year-old crypto investor, went from intern to Andreessen Horowitz partner in a year

A 'magic' new AI tech has become the hottest thing in Silicon Valley, VCs said. Here's why everyone's watching 'generative artificial intelligence.'

An ex-Twitter employee won a legal battle over unpaid severance. Experts say it could spark more claims.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pitch daily story ideas and work with your editor to cover compelling tech and startup stories
  • Conduct interviews with sources and pitch features, lists, and other story formats
  • Produce stories that are accurate, properly researched, error-free, and in line with Business Insider reporting standards and guidelines
  • Learn and become adept at Business Insider’s style of headline writing and Business Insider SEO practices

The ideal candidate has:

  • Experience reporting and writing
  • A curiosity about, if not interest in, the technology, startups and venture capital industry
  • A willingness and confidence to take the initiative to make calls and chase down interviews

All our editorial fellows should have:

  • A passion for digital storytelling, voracious reading habits, and familiarity with digital and social media
  • Ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced global team
  • A self-starter attitude and excellent organizational skills
  • Solid proofreading/copy editing skills

Additional Information

  • Fellows get 10 days annual leave during the 6-month period
  • This paid position starts in January 2025 and requires that you work full time for six months.

Business Insider is a flexible workplace when it comes to remote work, but an important part of the fellowship is being a part of the newsroom in person for learning opportunities. Fellows are encouraged to come into our offices in London at least two days a week. Business Insider policies, including the hybrid policy, are continually reviewed and may be subject to change.

Please apply with a resume and cover letter and specify why you're interested in working on this team. If you’d like some tips, check out our best practices guide.

Are you passionate about this opportunity, but worried that you don’t have 100% of the experience we’re looking for? We still want to hear from you! Apply online and let us know why you would make a great addition to the Insider community.
