Team Lead - Operations and Certification (Space Launch)

Our Mission - to fly to space twice in a day.

This is a substantial, complex project and we are looking for an experienced flight operations and certification leader with strong technical experience and a practical, can-do attitude.

What you will do:      

  • Develop and guide the Operations and Certification Team to best contribute to mission success.
  • Ensure the team is trained, skilled, supported and resourced to.
  • Understand internal and external stakeholders and frequently work closely with them to build relationships and ensure alignment.
  • Take ownership and accountability for your team’s performance and together with your team, certify and conduct spaceplane operations.
  • Manage the team’s project schedules and budgets, and coordinate resources.
  • Lead the interface with NZCAA (New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority), NZSA (New Zealand Space Agency), Airways, and other external certification and operations stakeholders with the support of your team.
  • Co-ordinate certification information, obtaining and maintaining the required licenses for spaceplane operations.
  • Work continuously with other Space Launch Programme teams to plan, coordinate, execute and report on spaceplane operations and flight testing.
  • Hold responsibility for spaceplane operations risk assessment and system safety.
  • Hold responsibility for the provision of training and competency assessment of spaceplane operations crew.
  • Take ownership of spaceplane operations and maintenance documentation, whilst working across teams to produce and review that information.
  • Oversee the maintenance of the spaceplane and mission control systems.
  • Oversee decisions that affect all operational matters of the spaceplane and mission control systems, particularly in the areas of piloted control and human-machine interface.
  • Hold responsibility for the management of projects to integrate and operate with customer payloads.

Requirements

What you will bring to the team:

  • A BE or BSc qualification in a discipline related to aerospace.
  • At least 7 years’ experience in the aviation or aerospace industry.
  • Proven experience in leading the planning and execution of aerospace flight test activities.
  • A portfolio of proven project management experience.
  • Proven experience in risk management of flight test operations.
  • You will be at your best when you are leading and guiding your team through unprecedented challenges.
  • Experience mentoring and fostering a culture and environment of ambition, creativity, discipline, empowerment, and cooperation.
  • Experience leading and managing a team of engineers and operators, ideally in a flat structured, and fast paced R&D environment.
  • Proven experience working across interdisciplinary teams.
  • A thorough understanding of aerospace systems engineering and systems safety.
  • A commitment to safety and driving continuous improvement of work standards across teams.
  • A genuine curiosity and desire to push the envelope on novel and experimental aircraft.

It would be great if you also have:

  • Master’s degree (or higher) qualification in a discipline related to aerospace.
  • Short-course qualifications in any of the fields of systems engineering, system safety assessment, software development assurance, hardware development assurance, environmental qualification or flight testing.
  • A passion for flight, and first-hand experience in flying a range of aircraft types.
  • A broad understanding of the national airspace system, its users, and the rules that regulate the use of it.
  • Experience in unmanned aircraft operations certification (JARUS SORA and CAR Part 101/102 or equivalent).
  • Experience in launch vehicle licensing (14 CFR 437 and 14 CFR 450).
  • Experience leading flight test engineering operations.
  • Proven experience leading a team developing novel technologies.
