Skyways is hiring a

Systems Engineering Intern

Austin, United States
Internship
At Skyways we are building a new form of air transportation. Some people call it the flying car. We believe fully autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles represent a unique opportunity to move things and ultimately people in new, more efficient ways. Our strategy to get there is completely different from the rest of the industry.

Skyways is a startup based in Austin, TX. We are backed by some of the most respected investors in Silicon Valley including YCombinator. Although we consider ourselves early-stage, we already have vehicles in production and in the hands of paying customers (see here and here). Come join us and work on a transportation revolution to advance our civilization!

Skyways has internships and co-ops available for Spring, Summer and Fall sessions 2023.

We are growing and looking for Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, and Software Engineers still in school to join our team as interns.

If you relate to the below, we want to talk to you about our autonomous uncrewed vehicles (UAV):
- You are excited about things that fly and new fundamental ways to go from A to B
- You aren't afraid of tough engineering challenges, that's what gets you up in the morning.
- You are excited about the opportunity to work directly on the aircraft and see your creation take flight.
- You are energized by the energy of a start-up and can work and learn in an extremely fast-paced environment where we get things done.

We are seeking individuals that are interested in joining our team for the long term, that is, we want interns that are interested in converting to full time employees upon graduation.

Responsibilities

  • design, build, and operate subsystem test apparatuses
  • design, build, and operate Hardware in the Loop apparatuses
  • write automation scripts to interface between aircraft systems and ground equipment
  • design and assemble wire harnesses
  • use multimeters, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other debugging tools for diagnostic purposes
  • run 3d printers and CNC machines
  • collect and analyze data to learn, iterate, and inform others

Requirements

  • enrolled in an ABET certified university pursuing a BS or MS or PhD degree in mechanical, structural, or aerospace engineering
  • have a thorough grasp on first principles and Newtonian physics
  • knowledge of aircraft systems and their relationships
  • knowledge of CAD (Solidworks, Catia, NX, Fusion360)
  • basic scripting experience, python preferred
  • you want to work at a small early stage startup
  • you want to wear many hats
  • self starter and resilient: take a project from start to finish despite vague or little requirements

Bonus Qualifications

  • participated in Design/Build/Fly, Formula SAE, Baja SAE, Solar Car, Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition, FIRST Robotics, Battlebots, etc.
  • demonstrated ability to independently drive projects from inception to completion

Please feel free to include a cover letter and tell us what ideas you want to cultivate and implement at Skyways. If there are technologies or strategies that inspire you, please share that with us. We encourage you to include photos and videos of your projects or things that inspire you. We'd love to see your portfolio, website, or other examples of work you've done.
