System Integration Engineer- Liquid Handling

Volta Labs is building a suite of genomics applications for our first-of-its-kind digital fluidics sample prep automation platform. Our technology will remove the need for laborious sample setup, provide a technology-agnostic suite, and shorten sample processing time from hours to seconds. We’re a startup, we launched our Instrument and platform to early-adopting customers this year. We are now expanding the capabilities of the platform by launching new NGS applications and automated workflows. 

The Systems Integration Engineer 1 will report to the Senior Systems Integrations Engineer, becoming an integral part of the pipettor fluidics team. You’ll own the development of liquid classes (during the onboarding phase) across all upcoming applications currently identified in our product portfolio.

This is a critical role that has strategic and hands-on elements, perfect for a builder type who craves visible impact in a growing team.

Day to Day:

  • Support Automated Pipetting and Optimization: Contribute to the design, testing, and refinement of liquid handling parameters (liquid classes) for precise reagent handling in Callisto, our Sample Prep System.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with the Application Development team to translate application requirements into technical solutions, ensuring liquid handling protocols meet performance needs.
  • Data-Driven Development: Use existing datasets to guide and validate pipettor fluidics setups, identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.

  • Complete onboarding, gaining a foundational understanding of automated liquid handling on Callisto and our overarching approach to genomic assay development on the platform.
  • Develop initial liquid classes by leveraging existing data, while building an understanding of liquid handling principles specific to Callisto’s unique capabilities.
  • Begin optimizing fluidics setups to align with specific application needs, with support from the senior team members.

  • By 6 Months, You’ll…
  • Take ownership of assigned pipettor fluidics tasks, managing development from initial requirement gathering and scoping to final testing and documentation.
  • Engage in refining fluid handling techniques, ensuring optimal accuracy, precision and efficiency (speed) across applications in collaboration with the broader engineering team.

  • Grow cross-functionally, applying new feature developments to optimize liquid handling workflows across projects.
  • Gain exposure to and contribute to the development of innovative approaches for enhancing liquid handling across various genomic applications, further building your expertise in automation within life sciences.

Requirements:

  • Basic programming skills (command line, Linux, beginner-level Python)
  • Familiarity with statistics (using R or Python)
  • Strong documentation skills, including electronic lab notebook (ELN) management
  • Presentation and communication skills; able to work well within a teamEfficient, creative problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
