Sustaining Process Engineer

This position is based in Wilsonville, Oregon at Samtec's Cable Manufacturing site.  
Summary/Objective:  The Sustaining Process Engineer provides technical support for the manufacturing floor for released cable products/processes as well as new product introductions. The main focus of this role is on maintaining reliable and safe manufacturing systems and procedures while improving factory KPIs including yield, cost, availability, and productivity.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities: 
  • Provide sustaining engineering support for cable manufacturing processes to ensure processes are capable and scalable.
  • Apply appropriate statistical process control techniques to identify trends and evaluate overall health of processes.
  • Execute engineering trials to characterize key process variables through DOE methodologies and statistical tools.
  • Lead continuous improvement activities following lean six sigma tools focused on manufacturing yield, cost, machine availability, and productivity.
  • Responsible for developing standard manufacturing procedures and ensuring critical technical process details are captured in all training materials/documents/videos.
  • Provide technical support for nonconforming material investigations and unplanned machine/process issues by applying root cause analysis tools and supporting implementation of preventive and corrective actions.
  • Ensure cable processes are in an adequate state of control for transfer to high volume work center and complete gap project work, as needed.
  • Provide feedback from the manufacturing floor to drive engineering efforts for new tooling, machines, and product development.
  • Promote a data-driven approach to drive sustaining activities towards the highest impact/effort.
  • Provide day-to-day direction to Sustaining Process Technicians to ensure proper technical knowledge on the manufacturing floor for new product releases and legacy products.

 Required Experience:
  • 3-5 years of experience in process, manufacturing, and/or quality engineering.
  • Wire and cable manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate and proactively drive progress with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong computer skills, data gathering, and reporting.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, creative mindset.
  • Project management training preferred.
  • Must be able to sit/stand for at least 90 consecutive minutes, and not suffer from any sensory deprivation and/or paralysis of the limbs.
  • Must be willing to follow all safety regulations and wear appropriate PPE while working around chemicals, rotating machinery, and high temperature tooling.  Must also be willing to follow all safety regulations and wear required protective gear (PPE).
  • Ability to travel up to 1-2 times per year.
Education:
  • B.S. or B.A. in Engineering (Industrial, Manufacturing, Mechanical, etc.) or other equivalent work experience. 
  • Lean Six Sigma background is desirable.
