Supervisor, Custodial and Support Services

The Custodial and Support Services Supervisor oversees the work of assigned staff and supports various work groups within the Operations Department to assist with carrying out the departments work in a nimble, efficient, and streamlined manner. Areas of work may include Custodial, Waste Management, Landscape Services,  Mail Center, Event Support, Moving and Delivery, and Dining.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Manages employment process of assigned teams, including completing request for personnel, interviewing, selection, training, scheduling, supervision of assigned staff, conducting performance reviews, and time approval. Counsels staff and handles disciplinary problems with some assistance from the Associate Director. Assists with establishing standards and quality controls for work performance, develops and provides training and oversees and inspects the work of assigned staff.  
  • Assures that the staff is properly equipped, trained, equipment is maintained in proper working order so that staff can complete their work in a safe, efficient, and effective manner.  
  • Conducts inspections of building components and contents, takes inventory of building contents, maintains project lists, evaluates condition, coordinates routine maintenance and recommends maintenance/replacements.  
  • Investigates, documents and follows through on damage, employee, and building issues in collaboration with Residential Life and Department of Public Safety.  
  • Helps establish and maintain inter-departmental relations with all departments and the College community in order to foster a shared sense of responsibility for college resources and community respect.  
  • Schedules pick -up and delivery of mail, equipment, furniture and other supplies to campus buildings.  
  • Follows established protocols and provided training to effectively and safely clean up substances potentially containing bloodborne pathogens.  
  • Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from team liaison and supervisors. Performs other duties as assigned to assist the department in obtaining and maintaining its mission. Performs all duties in a safe and professional manner and in accordance with established departmental practices and procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required. Leadership experience required. Computer experience required. Microsoft Office experience preferred.  
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and leadership skills. Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple tasks and be able to respond to a high volume of requests. Ability to work Saturdays and Sundays as part of a regular or rotating work shift. Must be available to work flexible shifts and overtime. Must be a self-starter and have the ability to work independently and as a team with minimal direction from Manager. Must be able to establish and maintain strong cross-department working relationships.  
  • Demonstrates professional communication skills with ability to follow oral and written instructions and create professional written documents. Ability to establish and maintain positive working relations with staff, fellow workers, students, and the rest of College community and supply/equipment vendors. Ability to develop and follow a schedule and demonstrates excellent time management skills, including excellent attendance.  
  • Must accurately interpret, follow and enforce College policies.  
  • Must be able to read and accurately interpret floor plans and accurately execute event diagrams and associated written instructions.  
  • Must have valid driver’s license, good driving record and ability to obtain a Middlebury College drivers license.
