Superconducting Quantum Device Technologist

We have an opening for a Superconducting Quantum Device Technologist in the field of superconducting quantum information and sensing.  You will assist with the design and installation of cutting-edge quantum processors and sensors, as well as help maintain the LLNL QuDIT testbed facility. Prior experience in the design and measurement of superconducting quantum devices, knowledge of circuit quantum electrodynamics, and training in the fundamentals of quantum information science is preferred. On the job training will be provided to help familiarize them with specific hardware and software systems at the testbed facility.  This position is in the Quantum Coherent Device Physics group, Condensed Matter Section of the Physics Division.

Depending on your assignment, this position may offer a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You may have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week.

You will

  • Perform Ansys HFSS simulations of superconducting devices
  • Construct and maintain RF and dc circuitry for superconducting qubit and resonator measurements
  • Assist laboratory personnel in advancing the state of the art in physically realizable superconducting circuitry.
  • Present informal reports of laboratory status at weekly meetings.
  • Assist a team in reviewing quantum information science technologies
  • Pursue supervised research into quantum information system engineering and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • MS in quantum information science or related field or the equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
  • Familiarity with a variety of quantum information science devices and platforms
  • Broad experience with control software and data analysis in Python or a similar programming language
  • Willingness to learn new skills and take on new responsibilities as experience develops
  • Ability to work independently on technical tasks, give input on technical objectives, and develop technical solutions.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers and other technical and administrative staff.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment, and present and explain technical information.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Micro- and nano-fabrication experience
  • Prior experience with superconducting device modeling, measurement, or fabrication
  • Understanding of Hamiltonian models of superconducting systems
