Notion is hiring a

Strategic Finance, R&D

San Francisco, United States

About Us:

We're on a mission to make it possible for every person, team, and company to be able to tailor their software to solve any problem and take on any challenge. Computers may be our most powerful tools, but most of us can't build or modify the software we use on them every day. At Notion, we want to change this with focus, design, and craft.

We've been working on this together since 2016, and have customers like Pixar, Mitsubishi, Figma, Plaid, Match Group, and thousands more on this journey with us. Today, we're growing fast and excited for new teammates to join us who are the best at what they do. We're passionate about building a company as diverse and creative as the millions of people Notion reaches worldwide.

Notion is an in person company, and currently requires its employees to come to the office for two Anchor Days (Mondays & Thursdays) and requests that employees spend the majority of their week in the office (including a third day).

About The Role:

Building is at the heart of what makes Notion, Notion. Just like we strive to empower our customers with the ability to build whatever tools they need, we want to enable our own Engineering team to build the best products possible. Whether it’s improving the scalability of our core product, expanding our product suite, or unlocking new features with AI, it is crucial that we identify and invest in the best bets to make Notion succeed. You will be the primary finance partner to our EPD (Engineering, Product & Design) org, helping them size the investments they want to make and driving accountability for delivering results. This position will serve as both an advocate for the EPD team to empower their success and as the guardrails for Finance to ensure we are building an enduring business model.

What You'll Achieve:

  • Be the source of truth in Finance on all R&D opex spend, setting annual budgets, creating detailed and accurate monthly reporting and maintaining a rolling forecast to make sure leadership has clear visibility into resource deployment
  • Partner deeply with your cross-functional counterparts to continually understand their current roadmap and ensure that they are adequately resourced to execute that plan, supporting their freedom to make tradeoffs in spend allocations to maximize outcomes.
  • Evaluate the unit-economics of new products & features and their impact to the overall company financials in order to inform operational strategy
  • Dive deep into our existing tech stack and understand drivers of cost to both accurately forecast future usage and identify opportunities for optimization

Skills You'll Need to Bring:

  • 4-6 years of experience across Strategic Finance, FP&A, Investment Banking, or Growth Investing
  • Rock-solid Excel skills to build driver-based models and work with large datasets
  • High attention to detail, pride in your work quality, and emphasis on always being a truth-seeker
  • Low ego and a hunger to learn, with an ability to work effectively with cross-functional partners to create alignment and drive the best outcome for Notion

Nice to Haves:

  • Experience working engineering teams and a general knowledge of tech infrastructure tools is a plus, but not required

We hire talented and passionate people from a variety of backgrounds because we want our global employee base to represent the wide diversity of our customers. If you’re excited about a role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every bullet point listed in the job description, we still encourage you to apply. If you’re a builder at heart, share our company values, and enthusiastic about making software toolmaking ubiquitous, we want to hear from you.
