Activities include undertaking research, design, development, and implementation activities to improve Magic Leap’s AR products and services;  designing, constructing, testing, and operating equipment; ensuring that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness, and performance are met in production processes; interpreting plans, drawings, and specifications; and collaborating across all Magic Leap teams to ensure our AR product and features provide a high-quality, immersive experience, meeting and exceeding our customer’s needs and our business objectives.

As a Staff Systems Engineer within our Systems Engineering & Reliability team, you will be responsible for holistically capturing stakeholder needs; distilling, managing, and validating requirements; developing architectures and optimizing systems, all supported by rigorous analyses. You will also be involved in system realization and integration, verification, validation, and other activities to ensure the delivery of solutions that satisfy stakeholder needs.

What you’ll do

  • Responsible for capturing stakeholder needs and requirements across the product life cycle, translating them into system needs and requirements, and validating performance targets, in cooperation with other teams.
  • Responsible for deriving and evaluating innovative hardware and software architecture options to satisfy often novel and challenging requirement sets in collaboration with other teams.
  • Responsible for defining modules, functions and interfaces, and performing requirements analysis, functional allocation, tradeoff/impact/sensitivity/risk analyses, modeling and simulations, and other evaluations to support requirement and architecture decisions, often entailing building custom tools.
  • Responsible for requirements and configuration management in collaboration with program management to ensure alignment in the development of Magic Leap’s products.
  • Involved in defining and supporting the execution of verification and validation plans for system requirements in collaboration with other teams.
  • Responsible for supporting system realization and system integration of product features, coordinating cross-team implementation while mitigating risk, and cooperating with other teams.
  • Involved in research and development of mixed reality systems, including investigation of broad and emerging technology spaces to meet design objectives.
  • Involved in prototyping hardware and software components for technology exploration, demonstrations, and simulations.

The experience you bring

  • 7+ years of industry or research experience with wearable systems and optical sensing/display technology, preferably in AR/VR/MR applications, and involvement in the design and development of hardware-software systems.
  • M.S (or higher) degree in Optical/Electrical/Mechatronics Engineering or related, plus 7 or more years of progressive industry experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. We are most interested in your total experience and professional achievements.
  • Strong understanding of technology and product development processes, the Systems Engineering discipline, including Model-Based Systems Engineering, and how to apply these methods to accelerate system development.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Systems Engineering methods to capture user/system concepts (including use case, sequence, and activity descriptions), requirements engineering, and architecture analysis (functional decomposition, allocation, synthesis), and related.
  • Experience and fluency in one or more mixed reality technology stack(s): SLAM, hand tracking, eye tracking, wired and wireless compute architectures, operating system architecture, graphics, rendering and warping, SLM and projection systems, near-eye displays, and related.
  • Strong understanding of user, software, algorithmic, and hardware constraints and their impacts on mixed reality systems and architecture optimizations.
  • Proficient in one or more programming languages, including Python, Matlab, C++, C#, or related.
  • Experience in data analysis, statistics, and visualization, and effectively summarizing and communicating results.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a track record of collaborating across diverse teams; excellent written and verbal communication skills.
