EQ Bank Engineering Team has been advocating building best-in-class branchless digital banking experience to advance millions of Canadians’ personal financial goals since its inception. Purpose of Job

Staff Software Engineer, Engineering, Digital Banking (SRE) is part of the team that will enable EQ Bank’s Challenger Bank aspiration: A banking platform to put the power in customers’ hands. Every feature we build is designed to give our customers an edge over their money to maximize their potential. You will use cloud-native technologies and product-centric agile methodologies to manage multiple cross-functional pods dedicated to launching new products, features, and ongoing business value for our digital bank apps.

Reporting to the Associate Director, Engineering, Digital Banking, you will help drive forwards the evolution our services platform into a modern, API-driven micro-services architecture using foundational Azure Cloud, DevOps, API, and PaaS services to deliver dozens of production releases per month. You will lead a cross-functional team through all areas of Agile Software Development and will partner closely with Digital Banking Business and Product teams to prioritize and deliver outcome driven solutions. This will include enabling MVP approaches and faster learning towards our customer goals and objectives.

The Staff Software Engineer, Engineering will focus on following outcome-based workstyle that can span from working as individual contributor on complex performance investigations to team leader guiding group of developer for software enhancements.
Strong background of agile delivery, architectural and communication skills, SRE techniques and mindset will be exercised with diverse assignment types.

Accountability

The Staff Software Engineer will create and execute plans to deliver the technology goals through strong solution and design, and excellent SRE skills in identifying, troubleshooting bottlenecks, and guide the pod(s) to better patterns for building a more stable and resilient system.

This role requires the individual to work across pods in driving the right observability practice, carry out POCs for innovation and help build best in class observability patterns. Staff Software Engineer (SRE) will also be involved in collaborative team efforts to focus on customer outcomes and respond quickly to customer feedback.

Failure to deliver on these accountabilities could restrict the bank’s objectives to deliver scalable and secure Technology at a faster pace.

Key Technical Accountabilities

Driving the solution for measuring and resolving key stability bottlenecks. Working in an agile environment across multiple scrum teams. Providing qualitative and quantitative status updates through project governance. Managing the technology backlog and roadmap for the pod. Driving continuous improvement for the Pod and support improvements for the overall bank’s methodology and tools.

The Work

  • Design, develop, and implement Java-based solutions using microservices architecture.
  • Deploy and maintain digital platforms on the cloud, ensuring high availability and scalability.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate numerous services and ensure seamless delivery.
  • Be a functional leader in the team, guiding the team with the best practices around solution architecture, observability and the SRE practice in general
  • Develop tools and frameworks to improve developer productivity.
  • Lead adoption of new technologies and tools in department.
  • Help automate pipelines towards continuous delivery and deployment.
  • Support architectural guidance and governance process.
  • Proactively identify and address stability and performance issues in the system.
  • Apply SRE principles to build and maintain reliable and efficient systems.
  • Automate processes to improve system reliability and performance metrics.
  • Participate in the full software development lifecycle, including design, coding, testing, and production release.

Let's talk about you

  • Have a degree in Bachelor or Master of Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Have 10+ years of experience in software application development
  • Have 5+ years of experience in leading senior-to-architectural responsibilities in scale-up and/or enterprise level environment
  • Have 5+ years of experience with Java, microservices architecture, and cloud services (AWS, Azure, GCP)
  • Preferred 2+ years of experience in site reliability engineering
  • Knowledge of container technology and deep technical understanding
  • Strong understanding of SRE principles and practices
  • Experience with performance tuning, monitoring, and troubleshooting
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps tools (Azure DevOps)
  • Strong experience in Observability tools and practices (Elastic APM)
  • Preferable to have experience in tool evaluation and adoption for team.
  • Self-starter who can take a concept and drive it through to the design and implementation.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervisory direction.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills

The incumbent will be working hybrid and in office time will be spent working from Equitable Bank’s additional office space located at 351 King Street East, Toronto, ON.
