The Role

The System administrator is responsible for maintaining, upgrading, and managing our software, hardware and networks. Resourcefulness is a necessary skill in this role. The System Administrator should be able to diagnose and resolve problems quickly, also have the patience to communicate with a variety of interdisciplinary teams and users.

 

Responsibilities

  • Overseeing the design and architecture of databases to ensure optimal performance, scalability, and reliability.

  • Monitoring and optimizing database performance by identifying and resolving bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and issues related to queries, indexing, and configuration.

  • Implementing and managing backup and recovery procedures to safeguard data integrity and ensure business continuity in case of disasters or system failures.

  • Implementing and enforcing security measures, access controls, and policies to protect sensitive data from unauthorized access, breaches, and vulnerabilities.

  • Forecasting future resource requirements based on growth projections and usage patterns to ensure adequate capacity and scalability of databases.

  • Investigating and resolving database-related issues, errors, and incidents in a timely manner to minimize downtime and impact on business operations.

  • Developing and maintaining scripts, tools, and automation workflows to streamline database management tasks, deployments, and maintenance activities.

  • Planning and executing database upgrades, migrations, and patching activities to ensure databases are running on supported and secure versions.

  • Creating and maintaining documentation, best practices, and knowledge base articles to facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration among team members.

  • Providing guidance, mentoring, and training to junior DBAs and other team members to enhance their skills and capabilities in database administration.

  • Ensuring databases comply with regulatory requirements, industry standards, and internal policies through regular audits, assessments, and compliance checks.

  • Collaborating with database vendors, suppliers, and service providers to evaluate, procure, and manage database software, licenses, and support agreements.

This is a hybrid position. Hybrid employees can alternate time between both remote and office. Employees in hybrid roles are expected to work from the office 2-3 set days a week (determined by leadership/site), with a general guidepost of being in the office 50% or more of the time based on business needs.

• A bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field.
• 5+ years of experience working as a database administrator, with a progression of responsibilities and leadership roles.
• Knowledge of security practices, networking protocols, firewalls, PCI compliance, etc.
• Proficiency in database management systems (DBMS). GCP Spanner required. Other DBMSs are welcome, such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, or MongoDB.
• Strong understanding of database architecture, design, and optimization principles.
• Experience with database performance tuning, query optimization, and troubleshooting.
• Knowledge of database security best practices and techniques for securing sensitive data.
• Familiarity with backup and recovery procedures, including disaster recovery planning.
• Experience with database replication, clustering, and high availability solutions.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with team members, stakeholders, and vendors.
• Leadership qualities, including the ability to mentor junior team members, prioritize tasks, and make informed decisions.
• Adaptability and willingness to learn new technologies and methodologies in a fast-paced environment.
