The Foundation Models Lab at ServiceNow Research builds the foundation for ServiceNow’s bespoke generative AI solutions, specifically tailored to meet the unique demands of our enterprise environment. Renowned for co-leading the BigCode project and releasing influential models like StarCoder and StarCoder 2, along with datasets such as the Stack and the Stack v2, our lab is now dedicated to strategic pretraining of foundation models for enterprise applications. Our mission extends beyond mere training; we aim to holistically design large language models considering their entire lifecycle. This includes curating training data to meet specific performance expectations, maximizing training efficiency and optimizing models for fast and cost-effective inference. By doing so, we ensure that our AI models are robust, efficient, and ready for further refinement and integration into ServiceNow’s broader AI ecosystem

What You’ll Do:

  • Work with Cutting-Edge Hardware: Utilize large GPU clusters and advanced parallelization techniques to maximize performance.
  • Optimize Large-Scale Training Pipelines: Lead the development of efficient model training workflows, managing jobs that span hundreds of GPUs. Use advanced parallelization techniques and tools like OpenAI’s Triton JIT compiler.
  • Develop State-of-the-Art Model Architectures: Design and refine language model architectures for maximum inference speed, robustness, and scalability.
  • Advance Our Open-Source Framework: Enhance our custom training framework, adding new features, improving performance, and optimizing memory usage. Help share insights and innovations from our lab.
  • Data-Driven Performance Optimization: Drive data preprocessing and curation to produce high-quality training datasets.

To be successful in this role you have:

  • A Master's degree with at least 5 years of relevant experience, or a Ph.D. in computer science, engineering, or a related field with 3 years of experience.
  • Strong Foundations in ML Systems: Expertise in ML systems design, distributed training, and parallel computing, particularly across multi-GPU and multi-node environments.
  • Advanced GPU Programming Skills: Proficiency in CUDA or similar languages; experience optimizing memory and compute efficiency.
  • Experience with Model Architecture Design: Background in designing scalable, efficient model architectures.
  • Hands-On Experience with Large-Scale Data: Familiarity with data curation, filtering and preprocessing.
  • Commitment to Open-Source Contributions: Experience or interest in contributing to the open-source ML community.
