Team Overview 

Coupang Eats is a new service by Coupang where we deliver quality food and beverages from restaurants and cafes to your door. Within the Customer app, our goal is to help the customer find the best food that fit their needs. As part of Search & Discovery organization, we aim at achieving this goal through 

  • infallible search experience that can retrieve and rank the most relevant stores for a user query 
  • personalized restaurants discovery with our tailored category browsing and recommendation content 
  • facilitate the customer search journey through spelling correction, autocomplete, suggested queries, etc. 

  

These search and discovery experiences are powered by a comprehensive ecosystem including state of the art ranking models, relevance models, scalable data processing systems, flexible online ranking framework, etc. 

  

About the Role 

As a Staff Machine Learning Engineering, you will work within a team of 8 engineers to strengthen and innovate our search and discovery experience for the Coupang Eats products. You will be responsible for the design, development and maintenance of the end-to-end Search ecosystem. This encompasses our online ranking system, multiple data pipeline that produces the candidates and features (offline and online) used across our different ranking logics, relevance and conversion modeling, etc. In a controlled environment, run experiments to validate and launch any features that would improve the customer experience. 

  

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Own the Search service, the backbone of Coupang Eats to make sure we are wowing customers constantly. 
  • Collaborate with the Silicon Valley eCommerce teams to share knowledge and continually incorporate latest state of the art technics 
  • Mine vast amount of data to gain insights from customer behavior 
  • Develop new Machine Learning models and features to create new recommendation algorithm or improve existing algorithms 
  • Create data jobs to generate Machine Learning features; build and train new models; run experiments to validate and launch new models 
  • Mentor and grow engineers on the team 

  

Qualifications: 

  • Master degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or related science majors 
  • 4+ years experience working with large-scale, complex datasets to extract robust features and create reliable machine learning models. 
  • Track record of diving into data to discover hidden patterns and solving problems with data science 
  • Fast paced self-learner with proven record of launching successful features and improving business metrics 
  • Strong communication skills. 

  

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Professional Korean proficiency 
  • Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or related science majors 
  • Experience with LLMs or recent NLP models 
  • Experience as a ranking engineering in a fast moving environment. 
  • Industrial experience working with online serving system working at scale 
  • Write robust and efficient code using Java with unit and integration tests 
  • Excellent communicator with great listening skills, growth mindset and can-do attitude
