Staff Engineer

About the role 

The Staff Engineer is an in-team technical specialist whose primary focus is to design and build fit-for purpose solutions whilst strengthening the health of the technical systems/platforms/products within the team. They will do this by leading and empowering technical practices which support the delivery of software within product delivery/systems/platform teams.

You will do plenty of hands-on coding and have opportunities to help shape broader patterns and practices through the tools and platforms we design and implement across SEEK. You will drive the alignment of your team’s technical roadmap to SEEK’s overall technical strategy.

You will also provide people leadership through mentoring, developing and may also line manage other engineers.

 

- Design system and related projects for prototyping and styling web applications, or
- Tooling for building, deploying, and serving web applicationsFor the given area, you’ll be asked to:- Direct and contribute to SEEK’s technology strategy
- Build platforms and tools that enable SEEK’s technology strategy
- Build and own a limited number of critical shared solutions
- Enable outcomes for product teams
- Exemplify engineering discipline and quality that uplift SEEK’s overall capabilityYou might find this role interesting if:- You’ve written a Babel or ESLint plugin (or wanted to)
- You’ve championed the use of a design system to other developers
- You've had a lengthy conversation about the use of px vs em
- You’ve written a tool to streamline your development workflow
- You’ve gone digging around the internals of Webpack or Vite (or similar)
- Or you’re simply passionate about browsers and the web platform

  • Experience building web platforms
  • Technical knowledge of solution and application architectures. Able to mentally visualise, draw, and process complex systems.
  • Experience implementing and maintaining tools for front-end development. Ability to build and run high quality, beautiful, and reliable software, tooling, libraries, and frameworks.
  • Comfortable using TypeScript and NodeJS to create engineering solutions for delivering web applications at scale. Working with tools like React, Babel, ESLint, Webpack, or Vite.
  • Experience writing code for, contributing to, and understanding community mechanisms of open-source projects.
  • Understanding of mechanisms for compiling source code, bundling web applications, and static code analysis.
