Wolt is looking for a Backend Engineer to strengthen our engineering team based in Japan.
Wolt’s service was launched in Japan in 2020 and since joining forces with DoorDash last year, we now have a product development team of 24 locally in Japan focused on unlocking the product challenges provided by the market. As an engineer in Japan, you will work across multiple teams, building products used by not only Japanese consumers but worldwide in 23 countries.
We build features with a focus to fit the local market, but we own and ship them worldwide to our 23 countries. We want to delight our users and provide a seamless experience - if you care about the little things, and are bothered by the smallest inconsistencies and bugs, this is the role for you. The team is especially focused on features that we think are more relevant in Japan - for 2023 this includes things like improving the pickup experience (gotta compete with those delicious konbini bento boxes!) and the favouriting/save for later UX, among many others.
We are a cross functional team, and on a day-to-day basis you’ll work with product management, engineering management and frontend and backend engineers as well as design and analytics representatives.
Our humble expectations
In order to succeed in the role, you’ll need several years of experience (minimum 6 years, ideally 10 years or more) building distributed systems using modern technologies and cloud platforms. Our codebase is predominantly in Kotlin, so you should feel at home with the language, and we predominantly use AWS to manage our services.
Quality is something we strive for in every aspect of app development from the user interface, to having a maintainable architecture and source code, so experience with testing processes is expected. Implementing automated unit & UI testing and collaborating with our excellent QA engineers to prevent regressions will be part of your daily work.
You should also have excellent communication skills and experience working in a large multi-team development environment. Knowledge sharing is a big part of our culture so you should enjoy participating and running regular meetups to learn from others and share your own experiences.
As a staff engineer, we expect you to be a leader within the team, helping to raise the bar for the quality of platforms, mentor and grow others on the team, and take ownership for delivery of complex, multi-team projects.
Our offering to you
Overall our product organization consists of a team of 400 people at Wolt and over 2000 in DoorDash. We aim to build none other than the best-in-the-world engineering team here. 💯
You’ll get to work in a company culture where we take ownership beyond the obvious, do common things uncommonly well, we think big but stay humble, do right by people, we treat others kindly and justly, recognise that if we don’t learn, we won’t stay still but fall behind and keep in mind that Luke was Yoda’s greatest achievement. Read more about how we work. 💙
The compensation is a combination of monthly pay and equity. The latter makes it exceptionally easy to be excited about our company growing and doing well, as you'll own a piece of the pie. 🙌
