Staff Back End Engineer: Platform

Raleigh, United States

Team Description

We are thrilled to invite a Staff Back End Engineer to join the data ingestion team. Situated in Pendo’s Platform Engineering group, the data ingestion team maintains and extends the critical data pipeline responsible for driving our analytics, guides, session replay, and other event-based features utilizing both real-time and batch pipelines.

Built in Go on top of Google Cloud Platform, our ingestion framework drives real-time analytics by processing hundreds of thousands of events per second, through over half a billion jobs per day, with over 4 nines of reliability. As part of our Platform Engineering group, the data ingestion team works between operations and feature development groups as a force-multiplier across engineering. We do this by providing a simple interface to a powerful ingestion toolset while incrementally minimizing operational costs and reducing latency, and also managing our customers’ data with care and adhering to privacy standards such as GDPR and CCPA.

Deliverables (what you’ll do):

  • Drive technical innovation primarily through hands-on work, while influencing strategic direction of the Platform organization.
  • Thrive on an engineering-driven team where you will be expected to identify, design, and execute optimizations in our data ingestion technology and self-service tools enabling feature teams to efficiently develop on the platform.
  • Optimize backend code and infrastructure-as-code both to improve performance and reduce costs. Define and refine SLOs and alerts to do so efficiently.
  • Create efficiencies and scale the team through automation, such as by designing new systems to safely execute data migrations across a broad range of business objects.
  • Utilize extensive experience to navigate the velocity vs. quality trade-off for urgent changes and actively mentor less experienced colleagues to do the same.
  • Share escalation on-call responsibilities for the backend services.

Qualifications (what you have):

  • 7+ years of experience in back-end engineering and proficiency in a compiled language such as Go, Rust, C++, Java, etc.
  • 2+ years of experience developing highly reliable (4+ nines) distributed systems, with a strong understanding of consistency and availability tradeoffs when designing new distributed applications.
  • Proficiency in modern cloud technologies, including Kubernetes, pub/sub, and infrastructure-as-code such as Terraform.
  • A track record of effective communication to both technical and non-technical audiences, including working cross-org with Product, Operations, and Security groups.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in an operational role such as Platform Engineering, SRE, or DevOPS.
  • A track record of establishing and supporting frameworks utilized by dozens of feature teams.
  • Deep expertise in distributed caching, including experience with shared caches like Redis and multi-layered caching techniques, such as passive invalidation, key distribution algorithms, and distributed locking.
  • Proficient in Linux systems, including bash scripting and data transformation tools such as jq.
