The opportunity 

The Product Development and Engineering roles are core of Magic Leap’s revolutionary AR capabilities.  These highly collaborative teams are responsible for our organization's engineering and technical operations, performing cutting-edge and complex scientific research and development that is defined as we build' to create new AR products, features, and marketplaces. Activities include undertaking research, design, development, and implementation activities to improve Magic Leap’s AR products and services;  designing, constructing, testing, and operating equipment; ensuring that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness, and performance are met in production processes; interpreting plans, drawings, and specifications; and collaborating across all Magic Leap teams to ensure our AR product and features provide a high-quality, immersive experience, meeting and exceeding our customer’s needs and our business objectives.

As a Sr R&D Process Engineering Technician within our Eyepiece Engineering & Process R&D team, you will be heavily involved in R&D, engineering, and precision prototyping. This position will be responsible for running and maintaining existing precision manufacturing & process equipment and utilizing best practices to produce high-quality, R&D-level prototypes and assemblies. Assist engineers with the execution of experiments and prototype production on precision manufacturing and process equipment, perform detailed inspection of completed work products using advanced microscopy techniques (optical microscopes, defect inspection, CMM, optical analysis instruments, etc.), and document and report results of experiments and process work. Be highly innovative and enjoy working in a fast-paced, rapidly changing, dynamic, and creative environment within a multidisciplinary team.

This position is based at our site in Austin, TX.

What you’ll do 

  • Bring semiconductor/micro or nano-fabrication or related experience, preferably in a clean room environment
  • Utilize manual, semi-automated, or automated tools and equipment
  • Operate diverse microscope and metrology tools, including but not limited to optical microscopes
  • Record process, run, and maintenance details in organized spreadsheets and communicate status
  • Collect, summarize, and communicate data accurately in detailed reports and regular updates

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

  • This position primarily works in a Class 100 cleanroom environment. Be able to suit up and wear cleanroom attire for extended periods. Operating process equipment and diverse microscope and metrology tools is essential.

The experience you bring

  • Associate's degree with a minimum 5 years experience as an engineering technician or related role
  • Or a bachelor’s degree with a minimum 2 years experience as an engineering technician or related role

It’s exciting if you also have

  • Experience with precision cutting and component process tools, especially CNC tools or lasers
  • AutoCAD or similar 2D and 3D modeling, viewing and editing
  • Experience entering instructions, including zero and reference points; setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches; calculating requirements, including basic math, geometry, and trigonometry; proving part design and build programs
  • Constructs precision prototype parts by studying engineering plans, materials, specifications, orthographic drawings, reference planes, locations of surfaces, and machining parameters; interpreting geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T)
  • Experience operating diverse microscope and metrology tools including but not limited to CMM, ellipsometer, optical spectrometer, SEM
  • Ability to analyze data using statistical methods and tools (ie, JMP), compile data into reports, and communicate data across teams
  • Experience interacting with vendors and process engineers on equipment installation, qualification, and maintenance. Ability to initiate equipment maintenance with disciplined data collection and interpretation
  • Experience with Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) tools and processes
  • Experience using a machine to build assemblies, CNC assembly, robot operation, and dispensing adhesives and coatings

Our salary ranges are determined by role, level and location. In addition to salary, Magic Leap offers a discretionary bonus, equity, and a fully comprehensive benefits package for eligible employees.
