As a Sr. Hardware Technician within our FEOL Process R&D Team, you will be an integral part of our Austin R&D facility. Our team is dedicated to developing wafer-level processes essential for eyepiece fabrication in augmented reality displays. This role focuses on front-end-of-line (FEOL) activities, particularly nano patterning and pattern transfer processes. You will have the opportunity to engage with multiple processes that drive cutting-edge R&D prototype projects using both internal Magic Leap and external vendor tooling. Additionally, you will contribute to developing methods and processes for transferring these innovations to Magic Leap’s eyepiece manufacturing line.

What you’ll do

  • Manually process R&D prototype wafers/samples through Magic Leap’s nanopatterning development line (including wet processing)
  • Characterize samples using physical and optical techniques (thickness, roughness, grating feature dimensions, defectivity, transmission)
  • Monitor process and metrology equipment health using data logging/visualization software to ensure high-quality sample fabrication
  • Keep detailed records and present data and images in a small group setting
  • Work with senior process and equipment team members to ensure in-house systems are available for material processing
  • Provide clear communication regarding project status and tool health
  • Maintain flexibility in work schedule to accommodate equipment availability, allowing for some stagger around a typical full-time window

The experience you bring

  • 3+ years of professional experience in nano fabrication, semiconductor processing, or other wafer-based manufacturing exposure
  • Associate degree, applied science/engineering certification, or equivalent relevant experience in an applicable field. We are most interested in your total experience and professional achievements
  • Understanding of wafer patterning process and process transfer
  • Process experience running and maintaining etch, CVD, cleans, or thin film metal deposition chambers
  • Proficiency using optical microscopy, AFM, UV-Vis spectroscopy, reflectometry, ellipsometry, and/or interferometry
  • Hands-on experience running manual wafer-based processes and metrology equipment
  • Familiarity with cleanroom protocols and best practices for maintaining sample cleanliness
  • Be able to work on multiple projects in parallel while effectively communicating project status in verbal and/or written formats

It’s exciting if you also have

  • Background in photolithography or contact printing and experience serving as a process or tool owner in a lab or manufacturing setting
  • Experience handling glass wafer substrates and familiarity with optics and optical components
  • Ability to communicate issues effectively to external vendors and tool service personnel
