Sr. MySQL Database Administrator (DBA)

Our team is looking for an experienced Sr. MySQL DBA who will be responsible for our product database and storage infrastructure, as well as supporting our complete software and product lifecycle. This includes supporting and managing production databases, tuning and optimizing performance, working the development teams for guidance, optimization and best practices. We primarily use RDS MySQL and are in the process of migrating to AWS Aurora V2. Knowledge (and possibly experience) with other relational databases, messaging systems, big data and NoSQL databases will an advantage. This position is based out of EMEA headquarters in Berlin.

What You’ll Do:

Participate in roadmap discussions and identify key areas for database improvements in the product, and incorporate these goals into development initiatives.  Implement, update and improve our current database infrastructure typically using Terraform and AWS native tools.

  • Monitor, manage and tune our production database for best performance including 
    • Identifying problem areas in our database access
    • Tune queries, indexes and code to ensure most effective use of resources.
    • Work with the development teams to define database schemas, update them while applying best practices for schema management
    • Optimize database configuration parameters 
  • Review and recommend database physical structure and functional capabilities to development teams, and 
  • Follow maintenance and business requirements to implement in a “no downtime” scenario.
  • Maintains quality service by establishing and enforcing organization standards
  • Provide guidance and direction to engineers to use best practices in database access. 
  • Document processes and procedures for efficient and robust database management 
  • Evaluate new technologies and data storage solutions, collaborating with the architecture and development teams 

What We’re Looking For:

  • At least 5-7 years of proven hands-on DBA experience with supporting production databases and systems 
  • Worked with AWS RDS and related tools
  • Driven MySQL query optimization, replication, backup and recovery (work with AWS RDS Aurora environment a plus)
  • Implemented High Availability infrastructure, including in-and-cross region solutions
  • Implemented automate database monitoring and self healing where possible
  • Implemented database security best practices
  • Worked with development teams, instructing them on best practices, helping analyze and define schema and troubleshooting performance issue
  • NoSQL databases such as AWS DocumentDB (or Mongo) administration
  • Schema management automation tools such as Liquibase or Flyway
  • Deployment automation (IAC) - Terraform or CloudFormation
  • Programming languages and and commonly used frameworks (e.g. Python, Groovy, Java,, Spring-boot, Hibernate ORM)
  • Experience with other SQL databases (e.g. MSSQL, Oracle, Postgres)
