SENIOR MANAGER, METROLOGY ENGINEERING
SpaceX Metrology supports maintaining the calibration, verification, and certification of SpaceX’s inspection, measurement, and test equipment. The Metrology Engineering Manager has a core responsibility for continuously developing and improving departmental processes ranging from calibrations to the overall quality assurance program. This role is responsible for identifying technical areas of improvement while mentoring a talented team of engineers and quality specialists to develop and implement creative solutions. In this role, you will be expected to have quality and efficiency as a key input for all actions and projects. You must be a critical thinker, demonstrate mental flexibility, and be a driver for positive change. This position will work with device owners and metrology personnel across all SpaceX sites to drive tactical and strategic initiatives. RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead a team of talented leaders, engineers, and quality specialists to identify opportunities and prioritize projects that increase quality and efficiency as it relates to calibrations and other metrology processes across all vehicle platforms and all sites
- Continuous development of calibration procedures in compliance with ISO/IEC17025 and ANSI/NCSL Z540.3
- Develop a robust metrology quality system to sustain compliance with ISO/IEC17025 and ANSI/NCSL Z540.3
- Responsible for all quality related processes and actions for the SpaceX metrology department. This includes internal audits, proficiency testing, calibration database fidelity, correctness of calibration actions, and more
- Mentor and manage quality specialists to help execute quality related projects, complete investigations, and continuously improve the department’s metrology quality system
- Mentor and manage a leadership team to enable development and execution of the metrology department vision via close development of all individuals
- Work with device owners to investigate and conclude root-cause regarding anomalous calibrated device behavior and suggest alternative more effective equipment where needed
- Work with metrology management to define strategy and prioritize projects for the greatest benefit to SpaceX
- Responsible for Out of Tolerance (OOT) assessments relating to calibration standards. Responsibilities can include completing the investigation to understand device OOT impact. Will have influence to recommend and coordinate device recalls if necessary
- Ownership of the Metrology Information System (MIS) to identify errors, implement corrective action, and sustain a high-quality metrology database
- Execute actions to incorporate all value add metrology database capabilities that are not used currently and address departmental needs
- Responsible for tracking and driving key deliverables including, internal equipment lead times and external equipment lead times
- Ownership of creating and delivering monthly executive overviews where applicable and all internal visual management systems
- Responsible for the creation of and maintenance of internal tool management systems and process improvements related to those systems
- Ownership of maintaining 5S principles within all calibration laboratories
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or a scientific discipline
- 5+ years of experience working in the metrology industry
- 3+ years of experience working with and implementing ISO/IEC17025 and ANSI/NCSL Z540.3 methodology
- 3+ years of lab management experience
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Master's degree in an engineering or science discipline
- 10+ years of experience working in the metrology industry
- 7+ years of lab management experience
- PMEL certified and/or experience calibrating devices relating to electrical, physical dimensional, force, temperature, and humidity or other specialty devices
- Software, database management and/or coding skills
- Excellent communication ability
- Ability to work in a fast paced, dynamic work environment
- Ability to meet tight deadlines with limited resources
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. unassisted
- Must be willing to work extended hours
- Must be willing to travel to different sites
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
Pay range:
Metrology Engineering/Sr. Manager: $175,000.00 - $230,000.00/per year
Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.
