Spring 2025 Legal Intern, National Security Project

The ACLU seeks a Legal Intern in the Legal Department – National Security Project of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY.

The Team:

The National Security Project fights for people and communities harmed by the government in the name of national security. Recognizing the danger of expansive claims of state power, we advocate for a robust system of checks and balances, and policies that comply with the Constitution, civil liberties, and human rights. Through the courts, Congress, and public education, we strive to ensure that people are able to participate fully in civic life and are free from discrimination, unwarranted suspicion and surveillance, unlawful force and detention, and the stigma and other injustices that result from these abuses.

What You’ll Do:

The intern will be responsible for supporting the National Security Project’s legal and advocacy work over the course of the spring semester.   

Your Day to Day:

  • Conducting legal and policy research 
  • Drafting memoranda, affidavits, and briefs 
  • Researching prospects for new litigation, including both factual and legal claims 
  • Researching and drafting materials for public education 
  • Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned 
  • Center principles of equity, inclusion, and belonging in all work, embedding the values in program development, policy application, and organizational practices and processes 

What You’ll Bring:

The internship is open to law students who will have completed at least one year of law school before the internship commences. Interns should possess the following: 

  • Excellent research skills, including conducting internet and legal database research 
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and writing 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite 
  • The ability to analyze complex legal issues 
  • The initiative to see projects through to completion 
  • A commitment to civil liberties, civil rights, and social justice, particularly as they relate to national security 
  • Commitment to the mission of the ACLU

Internship Logistics:  

  • Location: This internship may be hybrid or remote, depending on applicant preference. Interns who choose to work in the office will work out of the ACLU’s NY National Office.  
  • Time Commitment: The internship is part time (10, 15, or 20 hours per week). 
  • Internship Duration: Part-time internships span 12 consecutive weeks. This internship has a start date of January 13 or January 27, 2025.
  • Stipend: A stipend is available for students who are lawfully authorized to work. Arrangements can be made with educational institutions for work/study or course credit. Below are the stipend rates: 
    • $20/hour for undergraduate students or equivalent experience 
    • $24/hour for graduate and law students or equivalent experience 

Priority Application Deadline: Applications for the spring internship positions are due by November 1, 2024. 

While there is a priority deadline, our project is committed to review all applications on a rolling basis until the closing of posting.
