Pumpkin is looking for a Software Engineer - Engineering Platforms to play a crucial role in revolutionizing pet care by developing cutting-edge software solutions that significantly improve the lives of pets, their owners, and veterinarians. Your infrastructure expertise will support the creation of scalable, reliable, and high-performance applications that consistently meet business needs and exceed user expectations. By optimizing system infrastructure, delivery pipelines, and data structures, you will contribute directly to the delivery of exceptional pet care through technology.

This role is a remote for those outside of a commutable distance of the New York City office. Some travel will be required. Individuals located in the NYC area will be considered hybrid, with a minimum requirement of 2 days a week in the office.

What You'll Do:

  • Improve developer experience by streamlining local development environments, onboarding processes, and documentation to boost productivity.
  • Manage and optimize MySQL/PostgreSQL databases, including scaling, partitioning, resolving lock contention, and ensuring smooth data migrations.
  • Contribute to improving platform observability, monitoring, and incident response through enhanced dashboards and system status interfaces in Grafana and Sentry.
  • Assist with the optimization of cloud infrastructure within AWS, ensuring scalability, performance, and high availability of Kubernetes applications.
  • Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines in Gitlab to improve release efficiency and consistency across multiple repositories.
  • Collaborate with application teams to enhance security practices, including secrets management, compliance preparation, and application hardening.

What We're Looking For:

  • 3+ years of experience in a DevOps, SRE, or related engineering role
  • Strong understanding of hosting & optimizing databases like MySQL and/or PostgresQL 
  • Solid experience working with and building out monitoring platforms like Sentry and Grafana and integrating them with applications built in Python and Javascript
  • Hands-on experience managing production environments in Kubernetes and/or Docker and working with infrastructure as code
  • Proficient with managing environments in cloud platforms, especially AWS
  • Excellent communication skills with a demonstrated ability to collaborate cross-functionally with engineers, product teams, and other stakeholders to drive platform improvements

Bonus Points:

  • Familiarity with security standards and practices and/or regulated industry
  • Experience with configuring authentication systems using OAuth (Cognito, Auth0)
  • Experience with CI/CD tools (GitLab preferred) and automation of deployment pipelines
  • Worked in both a platform engineering team/ devops team and a full-stack development team in the past.
  • Familiarity with low-level protocols and concepts (HTTP, TLS, load balancers and basic networking.)

The compensation for this position ranges from $100,000- $140,000 (annually). Compensation may vary outside the listed range, based on a number of factors including but not limited to location, qualifications, performance, skills, and experience. The compensation range listed is just one component of Pumpkin’s total compensation package for employees. Total compensation packages, depending on the position, may also include incentive compensation, discretionary bonuses, and other short or long-term incentives. If hired, employees will be in an ‘at-will position’ and Pumpkin reserves the right to modify compensation (as well as any other discretionary payment or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
