Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Serials Cataloger to join our team. As a Serials Cataloger, you will be responsible for organizing and maintaining our collection of materials, including books, manuscripts, photographs, and other archival items in various languages for a major federal library. You will create and update records in our cataloging system, ensuring that they are accurate and complete.

Work Hours: Flexible - hybrid schedule (onsite for the first two (2) weeks for training; remote opportunity may be offered following successful completion of the training process)
Office Location: Washington, D.C. - Orange/Gray/Blue Line
Job Status: Long-term Contract - part-time or full-time schedule available. Full-time position is eligible for benefits.
Note: Work is paid by piece rate.
Requirements
Your Impact:
- Develop and implement Original and Copy level catalog collections of English and/or foreign language serial materials regarding various subject areas.
- Efficiently process titles in one or more of the following languages: Hebrew, English, Khmer, Spanish, Serbian, Croatian, German, Slavic, Hungarian, Russian, Yiddish, Asian, Middle East and/or Turkic languages by supplying required metadata in MARC21compliant bibliographic records.
- Organize and classify the collection of serial materials, books, manuscripts, photographs, and other archival items using inhouse classification requirements.
- Create and update records in the cataloging system, ensuring accuracy and completeness in alignment with NACO standards.
- Assist with recommendations regarding new subject headings and/or classification numbers.
- Stay up-to-date with developments in cataloging standards and best practices.
Your Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited institution.
- At least 3 years of experience in cataloging.
- Proven experience in transliteration.
- Experience working with the Library of Congress is required.
- Strong knowledge of cataloging standards, including but not limited to RDA, AACR2, LCSH, LCC and MARC21, BIBCO and NACO.
- Familiarity with various library management systems such as Voyager (preferred), ILS, OCLC Connexion, Classification Web, Cataloger's Desktop, and the LC Authorities list.
- Hands-on experience with metadata and taxonomies for catalog collections.
- Excellent written and oral communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast paced environment.
- Strong analytical, detailed orientation, and prioritization skills.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to move from place to place within the location; lift, push/pull, hold/carry of items weighing up to (25) pounds and occasional up to (35) pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials.
- Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.
