The Senior Windows Server Administrator shares responsibility for all Windows servers in the enterprise. This individual ensures that servers are running efficiently by performing upgrade and maintenance tasks, resolving technical problems, overseeing their performance levels, ensuring security, and developing new system structures, when necessary, across our global on-premise and cloud environments. They work with other members of the server and network teams as well as internal application teams to ensure smooth functioning. While this role will work primarily with Windows servers, it is possible they will interact with other types of technologies and applications including Linux, Macintosh, mobile devices, and cloud services. Server administrators install, configure, and maintain various types of operating systems and software, which often involves advanced management of services, managing access, carrying out backup and recovery functions, and monitoring the availability and performance of servers. They administer and maintain system and service accounts. They take part in the design, architecture, implementation, and maintenance of technology projects. Server administrators must have the ability to troubleshoot operating system, service, application, and network issues on servers and other related devices. Server Administrators often work with other teams in the organization to evaluate their technology needs, administer the network environment, maintain configuration management databases, follow, and maintain policies and procedures, and document them to maintain applicability. Server administrators must have adequate knowledge of many types of server-based business services and applications. As technical professionals, they must also remain aware of the latest developments to understand how to work with new technologies. This candidate must learn and understand business client functions and requirements, determine the appropriate technical tool to address business needs, participate in special projects, and perform other duties as assigned. The candidate filling this role will share on-call duties with other members of the team, including nights, weekends, and holidays. This is an on-site position.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Install, Test, and maintain server operating systems, software, patches, upgrades, applications, tools, and/or virtual hardware, ensuring optimal performance, security, and reliability.
- Provide senior level Tier 2 and above technical infrastructure support services for issues elevated from the Helpdesk and other Technical Services groups. Diagnose and solve problems, availability interruptions, and other issues.
- Implement IT infrastructure projects with IT and client team members. Communicate with team to keep them apprised of status and issues.
- Create/update documentation, including project plans, installation procedures, and troubleshooting tips. Create diagrams, including technical topology diagrams.
- Internet Information Services (IIS) Administration: Configure, monitor, and troubleshoot IIS web servers, including web application deployment and SSL certificate management.
- Manage and maintain backup and restore solutions, ensuring data integrity and disaster recovery readiness.
- Support patch management processes to keep all servers up to date with the latest security patches and updates.
- Set up and manage file sharing services, permissions, and access control lists (ACLs) to ensure efficient data storage and access for users.
- Identify opportunities to improve system and applications performance (e.g., automating manual tasks).
- Test and evaluate IT vendor products.
- Support remote access and administration of servers, including remote desktop services, remote installation, scripting, management solutions.
- Implement security best practices and compliance policies to protect server infrastructure and sensitive data.
- Participate in on-call rotation for after-hours support and emergencies. Share 24/7 operational support, troubleshoot server-related issues, and perform routine maintenance tasks such as patching and updates.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (with equivalent experience).
- Minimum of 7 years of experience as a Windows Server Administrator in a multi-site (hybrid cloud), enterprise environment.
- In-depth, advanced knowledge of Windows Server operating systems (Windows Server 2016, 2019, etc.).
- In-depth, advanced knowledge of Internet Information Services (IIS) administration and web server technologies.
- In-depth, advanced knowledge and experience with common system services (Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Firewall)
- Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure).
- Scripting & Automation of Administrative Tasks
- Proficiency in VMware virtualization technologies.
- Familiarity with remote management tools and protocols (e.g., PowerShell, RDP).
- Strong understanding of backup and restore solutions (e.g., Veeam, Commvault, Backup Exec).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively in high-pressure situations.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Industry certifications such as MCSE, VCP, or equivalent are a plus.
