Reporting to the Manager, Geotechnical & Water, the Senior Water Resource Engineer is responsible for the water governance, management and planning pertaining to facilities at Teck’s Legacy Properties across Canada. This position is primarily based out of Kimberley, BC or Vancouver, BC. The role may involve supporting Legacy facilities located outside Canada from time to time.
To be successful, we are looking for someone who can demonstrate strong analytical skills, an ability to work independently and as a part of a team, be results-oriented and have outstanding organization, research, planning, and interpersonal skills. A high level of proficiency in water modelling, with water balance models developed using GoldSim is critical. The ability to take initiative, act proactively to anticipate needs, and manage time effectively is vital. The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys working outdoors and is willing to travel.
Responsibilities
Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
Act as a Water Lead for selected sites with Teck’s Legacy Property portfolio supporting and managing water risks and opportunities
Ensure water management structures conform with Teck’s water governance requirements and industry standards
Participate in identification and assessment of water related risks, contribute to the maintenance of risk registers, and identify and prioritize risk mitigation measures and controls
Develop water management plans for Legacy Property sites
Provide technical and water management support to individuals carrying out water related work
Support continual improvement in facility performance, and management of project and operating costs
Lead all aspects of the implementation of recommendations from internal and external expert inspections, reviews, and audits.
Coordinate development and maintenance of water and load balance models
Coordinate internal reviews by Teck’s Water Working Group of both external consultant work and internal documents and plans
Oversee short and long-term projects, including supervision, coordination and review of consultants and contractors
Participate in various internal and external review processes
Prepare internal and external reporting on activities related to water management
Participate in annual emergency response exercises and risk assessment workshops
Participate in preparation of annual budgets and ensure cost controls are implemented
Prepare requisitions for proposals, evaluate proposals and bids, and review contracts
Qualifications
Engineering or Science degree in a water related field
Applicants need to be eligible for registration or registered with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C. (“EGBC”) as this will be a condition of employment. Teck will support eligible employees with their EGBC registration
Minimum 7 to 10 years with progressive industrial experience; water management experience in mining is strongly preferred
Technical understanding of hydrology, hydrogeology, geochemistry, water quality, hydraulics, water balances and water management planning
Understanding of the current engineering and remediation standard methodologies and requirements for handling tailings and water retaining structures
Experience with closure and reclamation of mine sites is valuable
Deep knowledge of the fundamentals of water modeling
Proficiency and technical knowledge of water modelling tools
Strong demonstrable computers skills, in particular Microsoft Office®
Experience with water data management, analysis, and reporting
Experience in project management is helpful
Solid understanding of water treatment plant operations and collection facilities is beneficial
Previous supervisory experience is an asset
