Senior Vision Image Processing Engineer

Primary Function of Position

The Vision Systems Analyst group is a part of the Core Technology Engineering group at Intuitive.  The goal of the group is to deliver the highest image quality to our surgeons for all our da Vinci robot systems.  The focus of the group is mainly on the imaging algorithms, algorithmic tuning and calibration of the endoscopes, displays, and illuminator needed to accomplish excellent image quality.  We also help spec and define the light source, optics, sensor and displays used on the da Vinci robotic systems because all these components contribute to the surgical image quality.

Essential Job Duties

• Design, implement, and improve methods and algorithms of camera image signal processing (ISP) pipelines.
• Evaluate and improve real-time image processing pipeline algorithms
• Optimize and deliver superb camera video quality to clinicians
• Obtain and iterate surgical feedback into designs
• Define software architecture and tools to be used across the group and organization
• Prepare and review patent applications
• Work with external vendors for technology selection and iterations
• Supporting formal risk analysis and documentation for regulatory submissions
• Supporting verification and validation of the vision system

Required Education and Training

• Minimum BS, MS or PhD (MS or PhD preferred) in computer science, imaging science, electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics or related degree
• Minimum 3 years of related imaging product development experience

Required Skills and Experience

• Demonstrated skills at innovatively solving complex real-world imaging engineering problems
• Experience in developing color image and video processing algorithms or camera control loops
• Experience in vision pipeline image quality optimization
• Knowledgeable in imaging physics, color science and human perception
• Knowledgeable in camera sensors, optics, display and illumination sources
• Proficient in Matlab and C/C++
• Willingness to learn CUDA and GPU programming (experience is a plus)
• Experience working in a regulated industry or on mission critical applications a plus

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Knowledge and industrial experiences nice to have: machine learning and stereo image processing.
