At Weights & Biases, our mission is to build the best tools for AI developers. We founded our company on the insight that while there were excellent tools for developers to build better code, there were no similarly great tools to help ML practitioners build better models. Starting with our first experiment tracking product, we have since expanded our solution into a comprehensive AI developer platform for organizations focused on building their own deep learning models and generative AI applications.
Weights & Biases is a Series C company with $250M in funding and over 200 employees. We proudly serve over 1,000 customers and more than 30 foundation model builders including customers such as OpenAI, NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Toyota.
As a Senior Software Engineer on the Artifacts team, you'll own and evolve the core system that powers model versioning and dataset tracking across the W&B platform. Working primarily in Go and Python, you'll architect high-performance solutions that handle complex artifact operations at scale. The artifacts system you'll lead is foundational to W&B's product ecosystem, enabling everything from experiment tracking to model registry features. You'll collaborate with teams across W&B to shape how ML practitioners interact with their models and datasets, while ensuring our libraries and infrastructure remains robust and scalable for both cloud and on-premise deployments.
Responsibilities:
- Own and architect the artifacts codebase, focusing on performance optimization, scalability, and reliability of our artifact management system.
- Design and implement efficient APIs and data structures for handling artifact operations, versioning, and relationship tracking.
- Lead technical discussions and make architectural decisions that impact how users interact with artifacts across our platform.
- Collaborate with frontend engineers to build intuitive interfaces for artifact management using TypeScript and React.
- Mentor team members and contribute to code reviews while maintaining high standards for code quality and performance.
- Work closely with product managers and customers to understand ML workflow needs and translate them into technical solutions.
- Contribute to code reviews, provide technical leadership in discussions, and mentor junior engineers to uphold coding standards and best practices.
- Prioritize user-centric development by incorporating customer feedback to continuously improve product functionality and deliver measurable value.
Requirements:
- 5+ years of experience building scalable backend services using compiled languages like Go, C++, or similar.
- Strong expertise in Python and GraphQL; experience with TypeScript/React for full-stack development.
- Strong experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure.
- Deep understanding of distributed systems and experience optimizing for performance at scale.
- Track record of taking ownership of complex technical systems and driving improvements.
- Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on delivering pragmatic solutions.
- Experience with ML workflows and understanding of ML practitioners' needs is a plus.
Why join us?
- Top-tier machine learning teams rely on our tools for their daily work at companies including OpenAI, Toyota Research Institute, Lyft, Samsung, and Pandora.
- You'll never stop learning. This role gives you first-hand experience talking with leading researchers in the field, understanding their problems, and directly shaping the product direction.
- Our experienced founding team has successfully built and sold ML tools in the past at Figure Eight, and their deep knowledge of our industry, empathy for our users, and skillful management is driving W&B to success.
- Customers genuinely benefit from our tool. Here's a quote from Wojciech Zaremba, Cofounder and Robotics Lead, OpenAI: "W&B allows to scale up insights from a single researcher to the entire team, and from a single machine to hundreds of them."
