What You Will Contribute To Altos

As an individual contributor and Senior Scientist in the Bay Area Light Imaging Innovation Hub (Bay Area Institute, Light Microscopy; BAI-LM), you will contribute to the development of Altos’ scientific programs with regards to light microscopy.  You will support the BAI-LM Hub Director to provide novel and inspired solutions to experimentation that includes light microscopy.  In addition to maintaining a suite of advanced light microscopes, this position requires a broad understanding of cell biology and how advanced imaging methodologies can be used to further understanding of cell biology principles central to the Altos mission. The successful candidate will also be able to provide sophisticated, expert solutions to PI laboratories as their science advances. This role will report to the BAI-LM Hub Director.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced technical guidance, mentorship, and training to scientists in all phases of light microscopy experimentation, including experimental design, microscope operation and image capture, data husbandry, and image analysis.
  • Engage with PI research labs to understand their science to anticipate upcoming LM needs and to suggest complimentary LM experimental approaches when appropriate.
  • Stay abreast of advances in light microscopy methods and technologies so that these can be brought to Altos as needed.
  • Establish training programs, best practices and user-friendly protocols/SOPs for the operation of advanced light microscopes with customized platforms.
  • Provide education and assistance to scientists in the analysis of microscope images using tools such as Zen, Elements, Arivis, Napari, Fiji, and other software. When appropriate, facilitate the handoff of the scientist and image analysis problem to the Computer Vision team.
  • Assist the Hub Director in refining and actualizing the vision for this innovation hub. This hub is not a passive drop-off facility, but rather provides inspired leadership in the LM technical area in service of the Altos mission and the excellent scientists who work at Altos.  

Who You Are

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in a related field, such as Cell Biology, Life Sciences, or Physics.
  • 8+ years of experience developing and managing multiple microscope systems in a scientific environment.
  • Thorough understanding of the principles of light microscopy image visualization, analysis and processing.
  • Scientific experience commensurate to understanding relevant projects at Altos to provide expert guidance for light microscopy experiments.
  • Deep expertise in advanced microscopy techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills, and proven ability to teach and interact with scientists in the field of microscopy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Nikon Elements control of microscope hardware E
  • Nikon Elements JOBS control of data acquisition
  • Hardware integration necessary for contemporary advanced microscopy
  • Practical experience with management of terabyte-size datasets from microscope to servers to analysis platforms
  • Literacy in Python and Jupyter notebooks
  • Practical experience with advanced image segmentation tools such as Cellpose

 

The salary range for San Francisco Bay Area:

  • Senior Scientist I: $166,000 - $230,400
  • Senior Scientist II: $192,000 - $273,600

Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location.
