Milhouse Engineering & Construction is growing, and as such we are looking to add a Senior Protection & Controls Design Engineer with reviewing responsibilities.
This position requires broad knowledge of electrical utility and substation engineering principles and practices acquired through progressive experience and education. In addition, we are seeking a strong technical background in protection and controls to develop and implement designs for existing and new transmission and distribution projects.

What you will do:
- Provide designs of the protection and controls for electrical utility projects for transmission and distribution level voltages within the PSE&G operating territory.
- Proficiency working on protection and control drawings including on-line diagrams, relay protection, control schematics, instrumentation and alarm schematics, SCADA controls, racks and panels views, wiring diagrams, cable schedules and bill of materials.
- Work collaboratively with electrical layout designers, civil designers, electrical project engineers, system protection engineers, construction supervisors, and construction field personnel.
- Provide guidance and reviews of protection and controls designs completed by other A&E's or other junior designers.
- Conduct site walkdowns as required to assess field conditions, evaluate scope of work, compare or verify drawing content, and meet with field personnel and other stakeholders to collaborate project requirements.
- Provide technical expertise to the divisions and construction personnel.
- Coordinate with vendors and manufacturers and review technical documentation including vendor drawings.
- Lead and mentor junior designers and actively participate in technical discussions as needed by the project team(s).
- Be an active participant and contributor to improvements in standards and design processes.
Your background:
- B.S in Electrical Engineering or higher
- PE is highly advantageous
- 9-12 years of electrical utility experience and knowledge of electrical substations and switching stations equipment, e.g., transformers, circuit breakers, medium voltage switchgear, gas insulated substations (GIS), regulators, capacitor banks, disconnect switches, oil pumping plants, and associated electrical system for switching and substations and or outside plant electric distribution and/or transmission systems.
- Candidate must possess a proficient knowledge of protective relay schemes and applications, SCADA, metering, A.C & D.C power and controls, alarms, fiber optic communication and equipment monitoring systems.
- Proficient in working on one-line controls, schematics for protective relays including microprocessor relays, control schematics, alarms, auxiliary power, SCADA and metering circuits, etc. and understanding of electrical layout drawings in order to effectively support projects.
- Clear and concise writing and verbal communications skills.
- Experience leading a large, complicated design project including GIS projects, as well as adhering to project schedules and preparing man-hour estimates.
- Experience in reviewing design work from other A&E's to comply with PSE&G standards.
- Office (Word, Excel), MicroStation, AutoCAD, Acrobat, etc. proficiency.
- Because the job requires driving to company locations and off-site assignments and events, must possess a valid driver’s license with a safe and satisfactory driver history. P.E license.
- Familiarity with utility best practices, IEEE, ASME, NESC and NEMA Standards.
- Experience with PLCs, substation data concentrators, digital fault recorders and similar equipment.
