As an integral part of the Pumpkin Experience team, you’ll be a champion for our users, our brand, and our mission of ‘Unconditional Love, Uncompromising Care’. You’ll be a creative force pushing innovation with every opportunity. Reporting to the Director of Product Design, you’ll collaborate closely with our Product, Engineering, Marketing, Data, and Underwriting teams to craft visually stunning experiences for pets, their owners, and our internal staff who make pet insurance possible. You will work to prioritize strategic initiatives across the roadmap to hit business goals, execute beautiful product enhancements & new features that drive Pumpkin forward in the industry, You’ll understand and improve their impact and effectiveness in creating seamless tools for vets, help pet owners understand the complexities of insurance and wellness products, and streamline workflows for internal claims adjusters. As a passionate design leader, creative problem solver, and collaborator, you’ll help elevate our products and design creative solutions that drive awareness, engagement, and growth.

This will be a hybrid position, with a minimum requirement of 2-3 days a week in the New York City office.

What You'll Do:

  • Create end to end experiences for our claims adjusters, pet owners, and pets (pre and post purchase) that drive business results 
  • Conduct user research and usability testing to gather insights, synthesize findings, and validate design decisions
  • Design incredibly polished work that represents the Pumpkin brand and product experience through visual comps, wireframes, flows, prototypes, and presentations
  • Collaborate with product managers, engineers, marketing and other stakeholders to define & prioritize product requirements and translate them into intuitive and engaging user experiences that can be build within our two week sprint cadence 
  • Partner with engineering to understand Pumpkin’s technical landscape and help QA work to launch top tier premium quality products
  • Develop and maintain design systems, style guides, and UI component libraries to ensure consistency across products and platforms while ensuring styles and designs are accessible and ADA compliant
  • Continuously contribute to the growth and development of Design at Pumpkin and help evolve research & design methodologies 
  • Mentor junior designers and provide constructive feedback to help them grow and develop their skills
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies to continuously improve our design process and deliver innovative solutions

What We're Looking For:

  • Outstanding portfolio of prior work that demonstrates launching software at scale with strong product design capabilities and examples of both stellar UX & visual UI design
  • 5+ years of professional experience as a designer working in-house or a startup
  • Exceptional craft and executional design skills. Everything you touch is beautiful and embodies the brand with a layer of polish.
  • Deep understanding of product design strategy and methodologies  
  • Ability to translate problem statement and user insights into design solutions
  • Strong presentation and collaboration with stakeholders and experience working in agile and lean environments alongside product/engineering counterparts
  • Exceptional visual design skills that translate to premium UI in implementation 
  • Strong command of design & prototyping software (e.g., Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, Miro)

Bonus Points:

  • Ability to integrate emerging technologies into their design process (eg., AI)
  • Motion design / animation experience
  • Content writing proficiency
  • Illustration or photography skill set

  • Your portfolio should highlight your ability to tackle diverse design challenges, from conceptualization to final execution. We value a portfolio that not only showcases polished end products but also provides insight into your design process, including wireframes, prototypes, and iterations. We encourage applicants to include case studies or project descriptions that provide context for their work and illustrate their contributions to successful outcomes.

The compensation for this position ranges from $125,000- $160,000 (annually). Compensation may vary outside the listed range, based on a number of factors including but not limited to location, qualifications, performance, skills, and experience. The compensation range listed is just one component of Pumpkin’s total compensation package for employees. Total compensation packages, depending on the position, may also include incentive compensation, discretionary bonuses, and other short or long-term incentives. If hired, employees will be in an ‘at-will position’ and Pumpkin reserves the right to modify compensation (as well as any other discretionary payment or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
