About Mux

Mux is video for developers. Our mission is to democratize video by solving the hard problems developers face when building video: video encoding and streaming (Mux Video), video monitoring (Mux Data), video playback (Mux Player), and more. Video is a huge part of people’s lives, and we want to help make it better.

We’re committed to building a healthy team that welcomes a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences. We want people who care about our mission, are ready to grow, believe in our values (from Be Human to Turn Customers Into Fans), and want to make the people around them better.

You’ll be joining a tight-knit team with experience at places like Google, YouTube, Twitch, Zencoder, Fastly, and more. Our founders previously started (and sold) Zencoder, an early leader in cloud video technology, and authored Video.js, the biggest HTML5 video player on the web. We organize Demuxed, the premiere conference for video engineers in the world.

We’re backed by top investors like Coatue, Accel, Andreessen Horowitz, and Y Combinator. You’ll get to work with amazing companies: hundreds of startups, plus Reddit, Vimeo, Robinhood, CBSi, Discovery, PBS, and TED. Customers large and small love working with us and love our team.

We are building something big together. We’d love to hear from you!

About the Role

Our users are software engineers and operators, from single developers building experimental video-based features, to the most seasoned streaming ops manager debugging an outage in the world's largest live event. We care deeply about their entire experience using Mux: signing up for our product, using our dashboard, learning from our documentation, and integrating Mux into their code and workflows. We're looking for a designer to help us build innovative products that enable our users to move fast and create successful apps with streaming video.

What You’ll Do

  • You will be involved in all phases of development: product planning, needs discovery, prototyping, and shipping.
  • Deeply understand the needs of developers building with streaming video to design the most impactful features and services.
  • Drive a design-focused approach with product and engineering teams.
  • Lead discovery discussions with customers focusing on feature discovery, trade-offs, and user research.
  • Use tools and metrics to find opportunities for better user experiences that will lead to more successful customers.
  • Be a contributing member of the product development team who helps increase our impact.

Who You Are

  • 4+ years of product design experience
  • 6+ years total experience in product, design, or engineering-related work such as front-end development with React or other JavaScript frameworks
  • You’re comfortable driving a design process that is open and transparent
  • You have experience prototyping and testing your designs with customers, leading design feedback sessions
  • You’ve shipped products, learned how customers use them, and iterated toward improvement
  • You enjoy working on diverse projects across the product teams
  • You can excel even as the sole designer on a project
  • You have experience defining roadmaps with product managers by balancing business strategy with a vision for the user experience
  • You care about how your design decisions impact the technical implementation
  • You love working with data–whether that’s designing data visualizations in the UI using tools like D3 or using internal data to influence your decisions

Nice to Have

  • A background in B2B, analytics, and/or developer-focused products
  • Experience maintaining a design system used across multiple products, preferably in Chromatic and Storybook
