The Role

As a Senior Postgres Administrator in our Foundational Engineering department, you’ll join a well established database administration function that's responsible for our various backend and database technologies.

This role is foundational to the company and fellow engineers, and you will find yourself at the heart of decision making for the majority of the company when it comes to data. The key to this role's success will rely on your ability to partner with developers and the wider database team to ensure we have a pathway to success in supporting SafetyCulture in its ambitions.

How you will spend your time

  • Providing in depth expertise to teams when they’re attempting to solve problems that might include; data migrations, new database schemas/structure or performance related issues
  • Wearing your detective's hat, trawling our databases for key wins that significantly impact reliability and performance
  • Understanding the business side of growth, aligning our roadmaps with the ambitions of the company ensuring that we take into account where the most impact will be
  • Stepping beyond the typical realms of a database administrator by spending time using our application to understand the pain points of our customers, and proactively working on solutions they didn’t know they needed
  • Ensuring our database infrastructure is geared to scale aggressively and still maintains reliability in the event of faults

What you'll need

  • Ability to provide best practice guidance to engineering teams and individuals with regard to database design and usage
  • Ability to develop and refactor simple and complex SQL queries, functions, views, and stored procedures to meet enhanced requirements
  • Experience with database sharding, performance tuning & optimisation, and backup & recovery management
  • Linux system administration & automation using terraform, ansible and packer or similar
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including a willingness to share improvement opportunities and educate others
  • Able to demonstrate SafetyCulture values (Think Customer, Open Honest Always, Better as a Team, Be Bold Bring Action)

Some experience that's nice to have

  • Experience applying software delivery practices to infrastructure and operations (Site Reliability Engineering) would be an advantage
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python or GoLang
  • Experience with various database modeling & scaling requirements
