About the team and position

The Safe & Secure EH&S Team helps to keep our 15,000+ associates, who work at our 200+ various locations, Safe and Secure every day. The Safe & Secure EH&S Team develops our Environmental Health and Safety strategy for the enterprise ensuring that our associate safety is and always will be a paramount priority. By leveraging their expertise and balancing the needs of the business, our Safe & Secure EH&S Team  allows us to do the right thing for our teams, our communities, and our business as we change the way people buy and sell cars. By working cross functionally this team builds strong partnerships with our business leaders to implement word class programs at each site consistently allowing us to ensure our associate’s Health and Safety is a part of our Carvana Culture. 

The Senior Manager, Environmental Affairs will support Carvana’s Safe & Secure team in their mission to build a world class environmental management program to ensure Carvana is a strong partner to our communities.  Extensive efforts will be placed on the development of enhanced compliance programs, guiding corrective actions, and supporting ongoing environmental needs across the organization.  This individual will play a leadership role in the collection of information, environmental permitting, design of compliance programs, review of material collected, and advisement to the business/leadership.  Experience and demonstrated problem solving skills will be critical for the candidate’s success. This leader will manage a group of 3rd party contractors to ensure resources are being utilized effectively to support critical business needs. 

What you’ll be doing

  • Lead team member(s) and a group of 3rd party contractors to build a world class environmental management program.
  • Build partnerships with Inspection Center/Reconditioning Operations, Market Operations, Logistics, Wholesale and other key business partners to collaboratively drive improvements in process execution to mitigate operational risks and regulatory exposure across the enterprise.
  • Leverage expertise, data, and other tools to establish Environmental Program Standards that are in alignment with operational partner needs and are adhered to through coaching and support. 
  • Leverage data and partner with EH&S Field Team Members to keep abreast of developments at sites to ensure environmental programs are adjusting to the needs of the business and that we ensure consistent regulatory compliance.
  • Stay in touch with regulatory developments and industry practices to ensure Carvana’s Environmental Program is constantly evolving to ensure we are in a great position to be an outstanding partner to our communities.
  • Advise Safe and Secure, Legal, and operations business leaders on EHS risks, practices, compliance, and key decisions.
  • Keeping every detail of your area operating like a “well-oiled machine”, but also taking the time to think through strategy and process with a broad perspective and make the necessary improvements to fuel future growth.
  • Partner with leadership and stakeholders to assist with initiatives related to new ES Processes and Programs to ensure strong execution at the site level.
  • Lead and develop direct reports, providing coaching, performance feedback, and continued development support. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What you should know/have 

  • Bachelor’s degree (preferably in Environmental Science or other related field)
  • 7+ years experience in the environmental health/environmental affairs field.
  • 5+ years experience leading individuals/teams
  • Proven track record of implementing change across multiple businesses/units.
  • Proven track record of leading teams.
  • Advanced influencing skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and the ability to work with ambiguity.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong problem solving skills with a willingness to think outside the box.
  • Self-starter’s mentality with a strong sense of urgency.
  • Willingness to travel 60-75% of the time.
  • Analytical skills/mindset.

We’d love it if you also have 

  • Master’s Degree (preferably in Environmental Science or other related field) 
  • Doctorate (preferably in Environmental Science or other related field)
  • Project Management experience that has impacted multiple business units/locations.
