About the team and position

We are seeking a qualified Senior Manager, Enterprise Data and AI Governance to lead our efforts in managing, securing, and leveraging our organization's data assets. The successful candidate will be responsible for creating and implementing Data and AI governance policies and procedures, collaborating with different technology teams to understand at an expert level Carvana’s varied, dynamic environment, and partnering closely with cross-functional teams who rely on the knowledge of the Data and AI Governance team, such as Information Security and Legal, to ensure the success of various initiatives, including those involving privacy and security compliance .  

What you’ll be doing:

  • Develop and maintain expertise involving Carvana’s information assets, including origination, use, storage, and sharing of such assets.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive Data and AI governance framework and management strategies to ensure data integrity, privacy, security, and availability across the organization aligned with industry best practices and organizational goals.
  • Collaborate closely with the Information Security and Legal teams, among others, to establish and maintain data management processes, guardrails, and vetting procedures for new databases and data solutions.
  • Partner with technology teams to map out data workflows and architecture, including the ingress and egress of data through different systems and cloud platforms.
  • Conduct regular audits of data processes and workflows across all our platforms and systems to identify and address gaps in data governance and compliance.
  • Stay up-to-date with the basic requirements of data privacy and security laws and regulations, in partnership with Information Security and Legal, and support the organization's compliance.
  • Advocate for data retention practices such as data minimization that comply with legal and regulatory requirements while considering business needs and best practices. 
  • Lead and manage Data and AI governance projects, ensuring they meet security, scalability, and compliance requirements. 
  • Spearhead evaluation and adoption of new data governance tools and platforms.
  • Develop, contribute to, and implement Data and AI governance policies and procedures for data quality, integrity, consistency, security, and compliance throughout the data lifecycle. 
  • Spearhead cross-functional initiatives involving Data and AI governance strategy.
  • Train and guide the organization on Data and AI governance procedures and best practices to foster a culture of data literacy and compliance across the organization. 
  • Document data flows, architectures, and processes, making information accessible and understandable for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What you should know/have

The successful Senior Manager, Enterprise Data & AI Governance is savvy in a technical and business environment, comfortable working with cross-functional teams of all sizes and focuses, highly attentive to detail, focused on successfully serving partners, a problem solver, and comfortable with ambiguity while simultaneously managing multiple large, cross-functional projects involving Data and AI governance. This position requires an understanding of Carvana’s organizational goals and priorities, and an appreciation of how governance efforts can support the success of those initiatives, while managing risks related to Carvana’s complex business, legal, and regulatory  environments. This position requires an individual who is comfortable taking large-scale tasks, breaking them down into digestible pieces, strategizing how to push progress forward while building programs and practices from the ground up, and leading such projects through completion with the support of and input from various organizational teams. This position requires frequent interaction with Carvana’s business, technology, engineering, security, and legal teams and requires clear communication that presents complex information in a concise and easy-to-understand manner. 

You should feel comfortable working independently, developing and navigating priorities and daily work with little oversight or guidance, as well as collaboratively and flexibly with legal and business stakeholders in a fast-paced, cutting edge, and constantly evolving environment, adapting your approach and demeanor to match shifting demands of different situations. Your identification of issues or gaps is always accompanied by innovative, risk-based solutions. You should possess superior communication skills (oral and written), approach problems with a sense of humor and humility, and desire to build trusted relationships both within and outside the organization. Success requires a highly collaborative nature, ownership over your own work, proactiveness, confidence, helpfulness, experience, diligence, and a passion to learn about business ventures and technologies.

We also require:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in data governance framework, data management, or a related role.
  • Strong understanding of data architecture and IT infrastructure.
  • Experience with data protection and privacy laws and regulations.
  • Excellent project management, communication, and leadership skills.

We’d be thrilled if you also have: 

  • Experience building and/or developing organizational AI governance programs.
  • Governance and/or Compliance certifications or credentials.
  • Experience operating in a highly regulated and/or technology industry.
  • Experience working in a highly matrixed organization.
  • Project management experience.
  • Experience with process improvement.
