What You'll Do

Epic Games is looking for a Senior Gameplay Programmer (Cary, NC) who is passionate about games and well-versed in C++, gameplay systems, and optimization. In this role, you'll utilize your gameplay experience, design sensibilities, and knowledge of the Unreal Engine to push the quality and boundaries of new seasonal gameplay experiences to delight players inside Fortnite’s Battle Royale, LEGO Fortnite, Rocket Racing, and Fortnite Festival, among other intellectual properties.

In this role, you will

  • Work closely with technical designers building, iterating, optimizing, and bulletproofing new gameplay items and features.
  • Prototype and iterate on features and be willing to accept and respond to critical feedback while ensuring that strong architectural and algorithmic decisions are made.
  • Supporting technical excellence of Fortnite and other projects.
  • Optimize and fix bugs in existing gameplay systems.
  • Contribute ideas toward Fortnite Battle Royale’s continued production and development.
  • Write robust, maintainable code to enable and empower other designers and engineers.
  • Solve problems across systems (network, gameplay, audio) impacting our games and developers.
  • Utilize strong C++ knowledge and multi-threaded programming techniques and thorough knowledge and proficient application of 3d math, rendering algorithms, and data structures.
  • Troubleshoot engine and platform specific issues.
  • Engineer manual and automated testing, bug fixing, and software maintenance.
  • Experiment with game design and use rapid prototyping while ensuring that strong architectural and algorithmic decisions are made.
  • Work closely with art and design to create and iterate on gameplay features.

What we're looking for

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, or a closely related field, from an accredited university in the U.S., or its foreign equivalent and 2 years of experience as a software engineer or programmer in the video game industry with all the following:

  • Developing, maintaining, and shipping a live service game on multiple platforms like PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, iOS, and Android.
  • Coding gameplay systems in UE5 with understanding of the following systems: Enhanced Input; World Partition; Data Registries, Data Tables and Data Assets; Ability System; Game Feature Plugins.
  • Using Perforce for version control.
  • Identifying and measuring the impact of performance bottlenecks with Unreal Insights, FramePro and Razor Profilers.
  • Optimizing the Networking, CPU and GPU performance of identified bottlenecks over different threads.
  • Measuring and optimizing algorithm performance costs.
  • Able to Create and Manage Game Feature Plugins in C++, understanding how the Game Feature Plugin State Machine works and being able to identify and solve plugin lifetime issues in both server, client and editor environments.
  • Able to create and manage custom Game Feature Actions to add generic functionality triggered by different Game Feature Plugin states.
  • Using and debugging Unreal Engine’s Ability System, coding and maintaining Gameplay Abilities, Effects, Attributes and Cues, with a solid understanding of the network prediction of those elements.
  • Creating features scalable to a high number of players in a single server and different target platforms including low end platforms like PS4, Nintendo Switch and Mobile.
  • Developing scalable engine-level generic Gameplay Frameworks and APIs
  • Real Time Multiplayer Game Networking experience in Unreal Engine, able to understand, work with and optimize the networking side of a game (Replication, Remote Procedure Calls, Actor Relevancy and Network Roles)
  • Pass test stressing logic skills, understanding of C++, and programming fundamentals, followed by a phone-based technical screening with senior engineers.
