Senior Food Safety Specialist (Supplier Quality)

About the Role

As the Senior Food Safety Specialist (Supplier Quality), you will play a key role in supporting the safety, quality, and regulatory compliance of ready-to-eat (RTE) and meal-kit products within the supply chain. Reporting to the Associate Director, Food Safety, Quality & Regulatory Affairs, you will provide support for supplier onboarding, supplier audits, and food safety investigations while ensuring all products meet strict quality and regulatory standards.

This role requires strong collaboration with suppliers and internal cross-functional teams to maintain high-quality standards, drive continuous improvement, and uphold food safety culture. Additionally, you will ensure the effective maintenance of the supplier management system, overseeing the accuracy, completeness, and regular updates of supplier records, quality documentation, certifications, and product specifications.

What you will be doing:

  • Supplier Management System: Manage and maintain the supplier management system, ensuring all supplier profiles, quality documentation, certifications, and product specifications are accurate and up to date. Regularly review supplier records to ensure compliance with food safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Supplier & Product Onboarding: Support the onboarding of new suppliers and products by ensuring all necessary quality documentation, certifications, and specifications are collected, reviewed, and approved. Manage supplier Sedex onboarding and self-assessments, ensuring compliance with food safety, quality, allergen management, and ethical standards.
  • Supplier Audits & Compliance: Provide support for supplier audits and third-party inspections, assisting in the evaluation of supplier compliance with food safety, quality, and regulatory standards. Help coordinate corrective action plans as needed.
  • Food Safety Investigations: Assist in investigations related to supplier quality issues and food safety concerns. Support the implementation of corrective and preventive actions to ensure compliance and continuous improvement.
  • Shelf-Life Validation: Coordinate the shelf-life validation process for RTE and meal-kit products, ensuring proper sample collection, data analysis, and verification of product safety and quality.
  • Non-Conformance & Corrective Actions: Work closely with Operations and suppliers to track non-conformances and assist in corrective actions to enhance food safety and quality systems.
  • Document Management & Reporting: Assist with maintaining food safety documentation, supplier compliance records, and internal FSQA reporting. Ensure all supplier-related information is accurately recorded and accessible.
  • Audit & Crisis Preparedness: Assist in internal and third-party audits (e.g., BRCGS, CFIA, SQF) by maintaining compliance records and addressing non-conformances. Support mock recalls, traceability exercises, and crisis management activities to strengthen food safety protocols.
  • All other duties, as assigned.

At a minimum, you have: 

  • 3+ years of experience in a Supplier Quality or Food Safety role, with exposure to ready-to-eat (RTE) products considered an asset
  • Post-secondary education in Biological, Chemical, or Food Science, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with supplier onboarding, including the evaluation and approval of new suppliers and add-on products.
  • Knowledge of co-manufacturing operations and the ability to ensure that suppliers meet safety and quality requirements.
  • Strong understanding of food safety principles, product quality improvement processes, and shelf-life validation for RTE products.
  • Ability to collaborate cross-functionally with internal teams such as procurement, operations, and customer care to maintain high food safety and quality standards.
  • Experience with supplier audits is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to address supplier and customer inquiries efficiently.
  • Ability to travel domestically as per business requirements (approximately 15 - 25%).
